Jn 16, 20-23

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Les aseguro que ustedes llorarán y se entristecerán, mientras el mundo se alegrará. Ustedes estarán tristes, pero su tristeza se transformará en alegría.

Cuando una mujer va a dar a luz, se angustia, porque le ha llegado la hora; pero una vez que ha dado a luz, ya no se acuerda de su angustia, por la alegría de haber traído un hombre al mundo. Así también ahora ustedes están tristes, pero yo los volveré a ver, se alegrará su corazón y nadie podrá quitarles su alegría. Aquel día no me preguntarán nada''.

Jesus said to his disciples: 
"Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn,
while the world rejoices;
you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.
When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived;
but when she has given birth to a child,
she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy
that a child has been born into the world.
So you also are now in anguish.
But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice,
and no one will take your joy away from you.
On that day you will not question me about anything.
Amen, amen, I say to you,
whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you."

Meditacion:

Leemos a Aristobulo Llorente sobre este pasaje biblico:

"El Evangelio de hoy sigue hablando de la alegría y nosotros no podemos hacer menos cuando pretendemos meditarlo y aplicarlo a nuestra vida. El hecho de que un tema se repita dos días seguidos quizá nos habla de su importancia. Parece ser que la alegría no es una actitud menor o despreciable en la vida cristiana sino un elemento constitutivo y esencial. 

      Estad alegres aunque paséis por momentos de tristeza y dolor, nos viene a decir Jesús. Porque –tenemos que ser realistas– la vida del cristiano, la vida en general, no es siempre una sucesión de momentos de gozo y alegría. En la vida hay enfermedades, separaciones, muertes, conflictos, dificultades, trabajos penosos... Hay también momentos de rutina, de hacer lo mismo, de aburrimiento. Todo eso forma parte de la vida humana y, por ende, de la vida del cristiano. No hay razón para ocultarlo. Y Jesús, sin duda, era muy consciente de ello.

      Hasta lo podemos ver reflejado en la primera lectura. En ese año y medio que pasó Pablo enseñando la Palabra en Corinto, tuvo que haber de todo. Momentos buenos y momentos regulares. De hecho, a lo largo del año se fue gestando un conflicto que terminó en la queja de los judíos ante el proconsul Galión. El asunto terminó en nada porque Galión lo desestimó. Pero habría que preguntarle a Sostenes, el jefe de la sinagoga y amigo de Pablo y del nuevo grupo, que recibió gratis una paliza sin que la policía se preocupara. No estaría muy alegre con la paliza.

      Tendríamos que aprender a diferenciar entre la alegría profunda del que sabe que está donde debe estar, que hace lo que debe a pesar de que eso signifique esfuerzo, trabajo y pasar por los dolores y conflictos normales de la vida. La alegría que tiene que vivir el cristiano no le exime de pasar por las condiciones normales de la vida por las que tiene que pasar cualquier persona. 

      ¿De dónde le viene al cristiano esa alegría? De levantar la vista al horizonte con esperanza. El cristiano sabe, por su fe, que esta vida está preñada de la Vida que se nos ha regalado en Jesús. El amor del Padre ha producido el milagro de alumbrar en nosotros la esperanza que nos da fuerza y valor y coraje para hacer este camino de la vida con esa alegría profunda en nuestro corazón. Las dificultades no nos abaten. La muerte no nos hunde. Y tenemos fuerzas para abordar los conflictos mediante el amor, la comprensión, el perdón y la reconciliación. Porque el amor de Dios es el centro de nuestra vida." Amen

In fact, throughout the year there was a conflict that ended in the complaint of the Jews before the proconsul Gallio. The matter ended in nothing because Gallio dismissed it. But we should ask Sostenes, the synagogue leader and friend of Pablo and the new group, who received a free beating without the police being concerned. I would not be very happy with the beating.

      We would have to learn to differentiate between the deep joy of the one who knows he is where he should be, who does what he should, even though it means effort, work and going through the normal pains and conflicts of life. The joy that the Christian has to live does not exempt him from going through the normal conditions of life that every person has to go through.

      Where does the Christian come from? To look up to the horizon with hope. The Christian knows, by his faith, that this life is pregnant with the Life that has been given to us in Jesus. The love of the Father has produced the miracle of illuminating in us the hope that gives us strength and courage and courage to make this journey of life with that joy deep in our hearts. The difficulties do not overwhelm us. Death does not sink us. And we have the strength to address conflicts through love, understanding, forgiveness and reconciliation. Because the love of God is the center of our life. "Amen
