Santificados en la verdad

Jn 17, 11-19

En aquel tiempo, Jesús levantó los ojos al cielo y dijo: “Padre santo, cuida en tu nombre a los que me has dado, para que sean uno, como nosotros. Cuando estaba con ellos, yo cuidaba en tu nombre a los que me diste; yo velaba por ellos y ninguno de ellos se perdió, excepto el que tenía que perderse, para que se cumpliera la Escritura.

Pero ahora voy a ti, y mientras estoy aún en el mundo, digo estas cosas para que mi gozo llegue a su plenitud en ellos. Yo les he entregado tu palabra y el mundo los odia, porque no son del mundo, como yo tampoco soy del mundo. No te pido que los saques del mundo, sino que los libres del mal. Ellos no son del mundo, como tampoco yo soy del mundo.

Santifícalos en la verdad. Tu palabra es la verdad. Así como tú me enviaste al mundo, así los envío yo también al mundo. Yo me santifico a mí mismo por ellos, para que también ellos sean santificados en la verdad’’.

"Holy Father, keep them in your name

When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me,

I speak this in the world
so that they may share my joy completely.
I gave them your word, and the world hated them,
because they do not belong to the world
any more than I belong to the world.
I do not ask that you take them out of the world
but that you keep them from the Evil One.

Consecrate them in the truth. 
Your word is truth.
As you sent me into the world,
so I sent them into the world.
And I consecrate myself for them,

"Jesús vive, muere y resucita para que los hombres tengan la vida. Pero su entrega no significa propiamente una sustitución a la responsabilidad que tenemos con nuestra vida. Jesús inicia un movimiento, da el primer paso, abre el camino para que el discípulo pueda hacer lo mismo. El se hizo fuente de donde todo procede para los que creen en su palabra. Por eso, la palabra que recibimos como discípulos suyos no debe hacernos inertes ante la vida, sino asumirla con todas sus consecuencias.

La palabra que hemos recibido pide testimonio de nuestra parte, pide que nosotros seamos sus testigos: “Como tú me enviaste al mundo, así los envío yo también al mundo” (Jn 17,18). Eso quiere decir que, si el testimonio de Jesús ha encontrado el odio del mundo, no hay que esperar que la condición de los discípulos sea distinta. El mundo sabe que la palabra de Cristo nos hace libres y verdaderos y eso incomoda las estructuras que viven bajo la dictadura de la mentira (hoy las famosas fake news), de la mundanidad y del relativismo.

La palabra de Jesús amenazaba el orden y la tranquilidad del mundo. Su modo de actuar fue considerado subversivo para los poderes de su tiempo: el poder político, de la cultura y de la religión. Por eso, fue juzgado y condenado por ser la encarnación de la subversión, por no aceptar el dominio supremo del mundo y de las potencias que lo gobernaban: la mentira, el odio, la muerte. Asimismo, es la suerte del cristiano que no tiene otra palabra que la de Cristo y otra suerte que la suya.

Es verdad que en nosotros hay un instinto casi irresistible de protección, seguridad y tranquilidad. Un ejemplo se puede ver en los padres que tuvieron que luchar mucho para lograr buenas condiciones para sus hijos y creen que lo mejor es ahorrarles esfuerzos personales. Pero lo que Jesús nos enseña es que el amor no puede ahorrar el sacrificio de las personas amadas. El amor es fiel y la fidelidad no rehúye de los sacrificios. Eso nos ayuda a comprender la entrega de Jesús en la cruz: solo desde la fidelidad al amor es posible comprender la obediencia de Jesús al Padre. Aunque no nos sintamos a la altura de las exigencias evangélicas, no nos sintamos capaces de abrazar los sacrificios que se presentan en la vida, lo importante es dar el primer paso. Como decía el Papa Francisco en la Exhortación Evangelii Gaudium: “Un pequeño paso, en medio de grandes límites humanos, puede ser más agradable a Dios que la vida exteriormente correcta de quien transcurre sus días sin enfrentar importantes dificultades” (EG 44)." The word we have received asks for testimony from us, asks us to be its witnesses: "As you sent me to the world, so I send you also to the world" (Jn 17,18). The world knows that the word of Christ makes us free and true and that bothers the structures that live under the dictatorship of the lie (today the famous fake news), of worldliness and relativism.

The word of Jesus threatened the order and tranquility of the world. His way of acting was considered subversive for the powers of his time: political power, culture and religion. For that reason, he was judged and condemned for being the incarnation of subversion, for not accepting the supreme dominion of the world and the powers that governed it: the lie, hatred, death. Likewise, it is the fate of the Christian who has no other word than that of Christ and another luck than his.

It is true that in us there is an almost irresistible instinct of protection, security and tranquility. An example can be seen in parents who had to fight hard to achieve good conditions for their children and believe that it is best to save personal efforts. But what Jesus teaches us is that love can not save the sacrifice of loved ones. Love is faithful and fidelity does not shun sacrifices. This helps us to understand the surrender of Jesus on the cross: only from fidelity to love is it possible to understand the obedience of Jesus to the Father. Even if we do not live up to the evangelical demands, we do not feel able to embrace the sacrifices that arise in life, the important thing is to take the first step. As Pope Francis said in the Evangelii Gaudium Exhortation: "A small step, in the midst of great human limits, may be more pleasing to God than the outwardly correct life of those who spend their days without facing important difficulties" (EG 44).
