Uno a tu derecha y otro a tu izquierda

Mt 20, 20-28

En aquel tiempo, se acercó a Jesús la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo, junto con ellos, y se postró para hacerle una petición. Él le preguntó: "¿Qué deseas?" Ella respondió: "Concédeme que estos dos hijos míos se sienten, uno a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda, en tu Reino". Pero Jesús replicó: "No saben ustedes lo que piden. ¿Podrán beber el cáliz que yo he de beber?" Ellos contestaron: "Sí podemos". Y él les dijo: "Beberán mi cáliz; pero eso de sentarse a mi derecha o a mi izquierda no me toca a mí concederlo; es para quien mi Padre lo tiene reservado".

Al oír aquello, los otros diez discípulos se indignaron contra los dos hermanos. Pero Jesús los llamó y les dijo: "Ya saben que los jefes de los pueblos los tiranizan y que los grandes los oprimen. Que no sea así entre ustedes. El que quiera ser grande entre ustedes, que sea el que los sirva, y el que quiera ser primero, que sea su esclavo; así como el Hijo del hombre no ha venido a ser servido, sino a servir y a dar la vida por la redención de todos".

The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
He said to her,
"What do you wish?"
She answered him,
"Command that these two sons of mine sit,
one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom."
Jesus said in reply,
"You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?"
They said to him, "We can."
He replied,
"My chalice you will indeed drink,
but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
When the ten heard this,
they became indignant at the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said,
"You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Meditacion:

El texto del evangelio de hoy siempre me hace sonreir porque muestra a los apostoles tremendamente humanos, preocupados por su parte de gloria en todo este tema de la proclamacion de Jesus.... humanos...

Leemos de "La palabra entre nosotros::

"Hoy, la Iglesia recuerda al Apóstol Santiago “el Mayor”.

Él y su hermano Juan eran pescadores en Galilea cuando el Señor los llamó y lo siguieron durante todo su ministerio. Jesús los llamaba los “hijos del trueno”, quizás porque una vez quisieron pedir que cayera fuego del cielo para destruir a los samaritanos (Lucas 9, 54), lo que revela algo de su temperamento. Junto con Juan y Pedro, Santiago tuvo el privilegio de presenciar tres grandes acontecimientos de la vida de Jesús: la resucitación de la hija de Jairo, la transfiguración del Señor y la agonía de Cristo en Getsemaní.

Pese a que ya había visto dos de estos eventos cuando sucedió el incidente que leemos hoy, Santiago seguía preocupado de su propia gloria y no lograba entender aún la naturaleza eterna y celestial de la gloria de Cristo. Lo que quería era estar seguro de que tendría una posición de importancia en el Reino que suponía que Jesús iba a inaugurar.

Varias veces Jesús había dicho que tendría que sufrir y ser rechazado. El pasaje de hoy sucede justo después de una de tales predicciones (Mateo 20, 17-19). Santiago y Juan seguían soñando, evidentemente, con experimentar el honor del mundo como seguidores de Cristo, pero el Señor les señaló su error, usando la figura del cáliz, para indicar que tendrían que sufrir mucho. No los estaba amonestando, más bien les prometía que un día participarían del cáliz del martirio que él mismo debía beber.

La indignación de los demás discípulos sugiere que posiblemente ellos también tenían ambiciones similares de gloria y prestigio. Por naturaleza, todos somos egoístas y orgullosos, preocupados de nosotros mismos y lentos para entender a Jesús. Pero esto no debe desalentarnos, sino más bien animarnos más: Por la gracia del Señor, Santiago pudo conocer cada vez mejor a Jesús, y confiar en su amor, tanto que fue el primero de los apóstoles que sufrió el martirio.

Pensando en Santiago, podemos ver más claramente también las debilidades que tenemos y la fragilidad de nuestra fe, y reconocer que Dios trabaja con su poder, su paciencia y su amor para santificar a su pueblo. Nosotros, los fieles de hoy, también podemos cambiar si nos acercamos al Señor, tratando de entender la gloria de Cristo y aceptando su corrección con humildad.

“Amado Jesús, perdóname por preocuparme demasiado de mi persona y por mi falta de humildad; lléname de tu gracia, Señor, para negarme a mí mismo y vivir para tu gloria.” Amen

The text of today's Gospel always makes me smile because it shows the tremendously human apostles, concerned about their part of glory in all this theme of the proclamation of Jesus .... humans ...

We read of "The word between us ::

"Today, the Church remembers the Apostle Santiago" el Mayor ".

He and his brother John were fishermen in Galilee when the Lord called them and followed him throughout his ministry. Jesus called them the "sons of thunder", perhaps because they once wanted to ask for fire to fall from heaven to destroy the Samaritans (Luke 9:54), which reveals something of their temperament. Together with Juan and Pedro, Santiago had the privilege of witnessing three major events in the life of Jesus: the resuscitation of Jairus' daughter, the transfiguration of the Lord and the agony of Christ in Gethsemane.

Although I had already seen two of these events when the incident that we read today happened, James was still preoccupied with his own glory and could not yet understand the eternal and heavenly nature of the glory of Christ. What he wanted was to be sure that he would have a position of importance in the Kingdom that he supposed Jesus was going to inaugurate.

Several times Jesus had said that he would have to suffer and be rejected. Today's passage happens right after one of these predictions (Matthew 20, 17-19). Santiago and Juan were still dreaming, evidently, of experiencing the honor of the world as followers of Christ, but the Lord pointed out their error, using the figure of the chalice, to indicate that they would have to suffer a lot. He was not warning them, rather he promised them that one day they would participate in the chalice of martyrdom that he himself should drink.

The indignation of the other disciples suggests that they possibly also had similar ambitions of glory and prestige. By nature, we are all selfish and proud, concerned with ourselves and slow to understand Jesus. But this should not discourage us, but rather encourage us more: By the grace of the Lord, James could know Jesus better and better, and trust in his love, so much so that he was the first of the apostles to suffer martyrdom.

Thinking about Santiago, we can also see more clearly the weaknesses we have and the fragility of our faith, and recognize that God works with his power, patience and love to sanctify his people. We, the faithful of today, can also change if we approach the Lord, trying to understand the glory of Christ and accepting his correction with humility.

"Beloved Jesus, forgive me for worrying too much about me and my lack of humility; fill me with your grace, Lord, to deny myself and live for your glory. "Amen
