Mt 10, 16-23

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus apóstoles: "Yo los envío como ovejas entre lobos. Sean, pues, precavidos como las serpientes y sencillos como las palomas.

Cuídense de la gente, porque los llevarán a los tribunales, los azotarán en las sinagogas, los llevarán ante gobernadores y reyes por mi causa; así darán testimonio de mí ante ellos y ante los paganos. Pero, cuando los enjuicien, no se preocupen por lo que van a decir o por la forma de decirlo, porque en ese momento se les inspirará lo que han de decir. Pues no serán ustedes los que hablen, sino el Espíritu de su Padre el que hablará por ustedes.

El hermano entregará a su hermano a la muerte, y el padre a su hijo; los hijos se levantarán contra sus padres y los matarán; todos los odiarán a ustedes por mi causa, pero el que persevere hasta el fin, se salvará.

Cuando los persigan en una ciudad, huyan a otra. Yo les aseguro que no alcanzarán a recorrer todas las ciudades de Israel, antes de que venga el Hijo del hombre''.

Jesus said to his Apostles:
“Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves;
so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.
But beware of men, 
for they will hand you over to courts
and scourge you in their synagogues,
and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
as a witness before them and the pagans.
When they hand you over,
do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Brother will hand over brother to death,
and the father his child;
children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
but whoever endures to the end will be saved.
When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.
Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel
before the Son of Man comes.”

Meditacion:

Para hoy he escogido esta hermosa reflexion del Padre Guzman:

Vivimos en una sociedad donde cada día se aseguran más cosas: la casa, el coche, las joyas o las obras de arte (el que las tiene), el riesgo de averías, de incendios, la responsabilidad civil de los profesionales (y aún en las familias), la atención sanitaria privada,…

Necesitamos un respaldo, y la sociedad (algunas empresas) nos lo facilita por un módico precio. Es una forma de vender tranquilidad. Si algo me pasa, está el seguro.

Jesús, en este pasaje, anuncia las peores calamidades para sus seguidores: persecuciones, azotes, juicios,… pero también garantiza el respaldo. Lo que ocurre que esta vez es gratis. Dios mismo nos asiste en las desgracias, en los males sufridos por su causa. 

Cuando Jesús dio sus advertencias y recomendaciones a los Doce —y por extensión, a todos los creyentes— al enviarlos a predicar el Evangelio, les hablaba por experiencia propia. El Señor dependió siempre del poder del Espíritu Santo y del amor y la protección de su Padre, pues sabía que era inevitable que su misión fuera mal interpretada y lo persiguieran. Del mismo modo, los discípulos no debían preocuparse de lo que deberían decir cuando los sometieran a juicio por su testimonio de Cristo, “Pues no serán ustedes los que hablen, sino el Espíritu de su Padre el que hablará por ustedes” (Mateo 10, 20).

Jesús fue odiado, traicionado, enjuiciado y finalmente ejecutado por su testimonio; sin embargo, en todo momento, recurrió a la fortaleza y la guía del Espíritu Santo. Hasta cuando sus enemigos pensaban que lo habían derrotado, Jesús permanecía arraigado en su conocimiento del amor del Padre y sabía que no sería avergonzado.

El Espíritu Santo que habita en nosotros es el que derrama el mismo amor de Dios en nuestro corazón y nos da la confianza necesaria para encarar la oposición (Romanos 5, 1-5). Pero si la persecución es inevitable, más cierto aún es el poder del Espíritu que vive en nosotros por el Bautismo. El Paráclito se deleita en fortalecernos cuando somos fieles y obedientes a Dios, dispuestos a pagar el precio de nuestro testimonio de Cristo. Sin embargo, los modestos pasos de obediencia que damos quedan siempre empequeñecidos por la fidelidad con que Dios cumple su promesa de guiarnos y alentarnos mediante la acción de su Espíritu. Es imposible tener una confianza más grande que ésta, porque no hay aliado más fiel que el Espíritu Santo. Adoptemos, pues, la actitud de Jesús y obedezcamos a Dios mientras esperamos con toda confianza la respuesta fiel del Espíritu.

“Señor, Espíritu Santo, me entrego por completo a tu protección. Concédeme la capacidad de confiar en ti para anunciar y defender el Evangelio, sin importar el costo. Ayúdame, Señor, a dar fiel testimonio de Cristo en todas las situaciones de mi vida.” Amen

For today I have chosen this beautiful reflection of Father Guzman:

We live in a society where every day more things are assured: the house, the car, the jewels or the works of art (the one that has them), the risk of breakdowns, fires, the civil responsibility of the professionals (and even in families), private health care, ...

We need support, and society (some companies) provides it for a small fee. It is a way to sell tranquility. If something happens to me, there is insurance.

Jesus, in this passage, announces the worst calamities for his followers: persecutions, lashes, trials, ... but also guarantees the support. What happens that this time is free. God himself assists us in misfortunes, in the evils suffered by his cause.

When Jesus gave his warnings and recommendations to the Twelve - and by extension, to all the believers - when he sent them to preach the Gospel, he spoke to them from his own experience. The Lord always depended on the power of the Holy Spirit and the love and protection of his Father, because he knew that it was inevitable that his mission was misinterpreted and persecuted. Similarly, the disciples should not worry about what they should say when they were put on trial for their testimony of Christ, "For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who will speak for you" (Matthew 10, twenty).

Jesus was hated, betrayed, prosecuted and finally executed for his testimony; however, at all times, he resorted to the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Even when his enemies thought he had been defeated, Jesus remained rooted in his knowledge of the Father's love and knew he would not be ashamed.

The Holy Spirit who dwells in us is the one who pours out the same love of God in our hearts and gives us the confidence to face opposition (Romans 5: 1-5). But if persecution is inevitable, even more true is the power of the Spirit that lives in us through Baptism. The Paraclete delights to strengthen us when we are faithful and obedient to God, willing to pay the price of our testimony of Christ. However, the modest steps of obedience that we give are always dwarfed by the faithfulness with which God fulfills his promise to guide and encourage us through the action of his Spirit. It is impossible to have a greater trust than this, because there is no ally more faithful than the Holy Spirit. Let us, then, adopt the attitude of Jesus and obey God as we confidently await the faithful response of the Spirit.

"Lord, Holy Spirit, I surrender completely to your protection. Grant me the ability to trust you to announce and defend the Gospel, no matter the cost. Help me, Lord, to give faithful testimony of Christ in all situations of my life. "Amen
