Grano de mostaza

Mt 17, 14-20

En aquel tiempo, al llegar Jesús a donde estaba la multitud, se le acercó un hombre, que se puso de rodillas y le dijo: "Señor, ten compasión de mi hijo. Le dan ataques terribles. Unas veces se cae en la lumbre y otras muchas, en el agua. Se lo traje a tus discípulos, pero no han podido curarlo".

Entonces Jesús exclamó: "¿Hasta cuándo estaré con esta gente incrédula y perversa? ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que aguantarla? Tráiganme aquí al muchacho". Jesús ordenó al demonio que saliera del muchacho, y desde ese momento éste quedó sano.

Después, al quedarse solos con Jesús, los discípulos le preguntaron: "¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos echar fuera a ese demonio?" Les respondió Jesús: "Porque les falta fe. Pues yo les aseguro que si ustedes tuvieran fe al menos del tamaño de una semilla de mostaza, podrían decirle a ese monte: 'Trasládate de aquí para allá', y el monte se trasladaría. Entonces nada sería imposible para ustedes".

A man came up to Jesus, knelt down before him, and said,
"Lord, have pity on my son, who is a lunatic and suffers severely;
often he falls into fire, and often into water.
I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him."
Jesus said in reply,
"O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you?
How long will I endure you? 
Bring the boy here to me."
Jesus rebuked him and the demon came out of him,
and from that hour the boy was cured.
Then the disciples approached Jesus in private and said,
"Why could we not drive it out?"
He said to them, "Because of your little faith.
Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed,
you will say to this mountain,
'Move from here to there,' and it will move.
Nothing will be impossible for you."

Meditacion:

Reaparece el grano de mostaza, esta vez como patrón para medir el tamaño de nuestra fe y de su eficacia. En el combate contra el mal, en el diario afán por expulsar demonios que sojuzgan o merman la vida de las personas o la propia vida, ¿qué confianza tenemos en Dios, cómo nos apoyamos en Él?

Los discípulos habían recibido el poder de arrojar demonios, como también el de curar a los enfermos. Podían sentirse perfectamente legitimados para la tarea de exorcistas, no los podía acusar Jesús, ni nadie, de que pretendían grandezas que superaran su capacidad. De hecho, fueron enviados en misión con ese poder y ese objetivo. Pero en esta ocasión fracasan. ¿Por qué? Jesús no les había retirado la confianza ni los había destituido de su función. Pero fallan, lo que significa que una vez más van a comprobar el estado de su fe, estado que con tanta frecuencia denuncia el evangelista: era pequeña, raquítica; se dejaba afectar por la duda; necesitaba madurar, crecer, consolidarse.

En nuestro camino de discípulos, ¿en qué momentos flaquea la fe? ¿Ponemos la confianza en Dios? ¿Nos trabaja más bien o acaso nos habita secretamente el sentimiento de que nada puede cambiar, de que todo va a seguir igual, de que no vale la pena creer, amar y servir, de que no tiene sentido vivir y transmitir el evangelio, de que “la cultura dominante” es la verdadera fuerza de la historia que es sensato acoger y acatar?

En el relato que ofrece Marcos de este mismo episodio, el padre suplica a Jesús: «¡Creo, pero ayúdame a tener más fe!». Esta misma puede ser nuestra oración, en particular si se da en nosotros cierta tendencia a ese fatalismo que no deja resquicio a Dios ni acepta la acción de su Espíritu en los hombres.

“Señor y Salvador mío, quiero unirme a ti con toda mi mente y mi corazón porque, unido a ti, puedo orar eficazmente por los enfermos y los que sufren, y te pido que los toques con tu poder sanador. Señor, ¡que se haga conforme a tu voluntad!” Amen

Mustard grain reappears, this time as a pattern to measure the size of our faith and its effectiveness. In the fight against evil, in the daily eagerness to expel demons that subjugate or diminish the life of people or their own life, what confidence do we have in God, how do we rely on Him?

The disciples had received the power to cast out demons, as well as to heal the sick. They could feel perfectly legitimized for the task of exorcists, they could not accuse Jesus, or anyone, that they claimed greatness that exceeded their ability. In fact, they were sent on mission with that power and that goal. But this time they fail. Why? Jesus had not withdrawn their trust or dismissed them from their function. But they fail, which means that once again they will check the state of their faith, a state that the Evangelist so often denounces: it was small, rickety; he was affected by doubt; I needed to mature, grow, consolidate.

In our journey as disciples, in what moments does faith falter? Do we put trust in God? Does it work for us more or do we secretly live in the feeling that nothing can change, that everything will remain the same, that it is not worth believing, loving and serving, that there is no point in living and transmitting the Gospel, that "the dominant culture" is the true force of history that is sensible to accept and accept?

In the story that Marcos offers of this same episode, the father begs Jesus: "I believe, but help me to have more faith!". This can be our prayer, especially if there is a certain tendency in us towards this fatalism that leaves no room for God nor accepts the action of his Spirit in men.

"Lord and my Savior, I want to join you with all my mind and my heart because, united with you, I can pray effectively for the sick and those who suffer, and I ask you to touch them with your healing power. Lord, may it be done according to your will! "Amen
