Fiesta de San Juan

Mt 14, 1-12

En aquel tiempo, el rey Herodes oyó lo que contaban de Jesús y les dijo a sus cortesanos: "Es Juan el Bautista, que ha resucitado de entre los muertos y por eso actúan en él fuerzas milagrosas".

Herodes había apresado a Juan y lo había encadenado en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Filipo, pues Juan le decía a Herodes que no le estaba permitido tenerla por mujer. Y aunque quería quitarle la vida, le tenía miedo a la gente, porque creían que Juan era un profeta.

Pero llegó el cumpleaños de Herodes, y la hija de Herodías bailó delante de todos y le gustó tanto a Herodes, que juró darle lo que le pidiera. Ella, aconsejada por su madre, le dijo: "Dame, sobre esta bandeja, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista".

El rey se entristeció, pero a causa de su juramento y por no quedar mal con los invitados, ordenó que se la dieran; y entonces mandó degollar a Juan en la cárcel. Trajeron, pues, la cabeza en una bandeja, se la entregaron a la joven y ella se la llevó a su madre.

Después vinieron los discípulos de Juan, recogieron el cuerpo, lo sepultaron, y luego fueron a avisarle a Jesús.

Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus
and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist.
He has been raised from the dead;
that is why mighty powers are at work in him."

Now Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison
on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
for John had said to him,
"It is not lawful for you to have her."
Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people,
for they regarded him as a prophet.
But at a birthday celebration for Herod,
the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests
and delighted Herod so much
that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.
Prompted by her mother, she said,
"Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
The king was distressed,
but because of his oaths and the guests who were present,
he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison.
His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl,
who took it to her mother.
His disciples came and took away the corpse
and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

Meditacion:

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de San Juan Bautista, primo de Jesus, anunciador del Reino, un verdadero misionero. Su nacimiento fue anunciado por un angel a su padre Zacarias el cual le había anunciado que el Bautista estaría lleno del Espíritu Santo y que haría “que muchos de la nación de Israel se volvieran al Señor su Dios” (Lucas 1, 16).

Cuando nació Juan, viendo todas las cosas que habían sucedido durante el embarazo de su madre, la gente se preguntaba “¿Qué llegará a ser este niño?” (Lucas 1, 66). Habiéndose enterado de los prodigios que habían ocurrido en torno al nacimiento de esta criatura, como la aparición del ángel mensajero a Zacarías, la concepción milagrosa en Isabel y el cántico profético del padre, sin duda suponían que el niño llegaría a ser un gran hombre. Cuando Juan llegó a la vida adulta, se fue a vivir en el desierto, apartado del mundo, a fin de prepararse para su misión de ser el precursor del Mesías de Israel. Seguramente muchos dijeron “¡Qué desperdicio!”, lo cual no es muy diferente de lo que se escucha hoy cuando un joven ingresa al seminario o una joven a un convento.

Pero Juan no hacía más que cumplir su vocación, porque en el desierto aprendería a escuchar la voz de Dios. Allí descubrió que él debía ser “el amigo del novio” (Juan 3, 29), el que prepararía el camino para el Mesías. Juan dedicó toda su vida a cumplir este único propósito. Por amor y obediencia, se sometió a la voluntad de Dios y así llegó a ser un ejemplo claro y evidente para todos de la superabundante grandeza de Aquel que venía tras sus pasos.

Todos nosotros, al igual que San Juan, fuimos creados con un propósito singular. Si buscamos a Dios en la oración, la Escritura y las enseñanzas de la Iglesia, el Espíritu Santo nos enseñará a descubrir cuál es nuestra misión. Todos podemos llegar a ser como San Juan y entregarnos de corazón para adelantar el Reino de Dios y llegar a ser “amigos del novio”, que se postran al pie de la cruz para entregar la vida por Cristo.

“Toma, Señor; te entrego mi vida. Concédeme la gracia, te lo ruego, de escuchar tu llamada y responderte con todas mis fuerzas y todo mi corazón.”

Por ultimo y antes de despedirme los invito a compartir nuestra celebracion en nuestra nueva Parroquia "San Oscar Romero" en el 1823 9th street en Berkeley a las 4:30 pm. Es la primera Parroquia dedicada a este gran martir que supo dar su vida por los pobres.

Today we celebrate the feast of Saint John the Baptist, cousin of Jesus, announcer of the Kingdom, a true missionary. His birth was announced by an angel to his father Zacarias who had announced that the Baptist would be filled with the Holy Spirit and that he would "make many of the nation of Israel turn to the Lord their God" (Luke 1:16).

When John was born, seeing all the things that had happened during his mother's pregnancy, people asked "What will this child become?" (Luke 1, 66). Having learned of the wonders that had occurred around the birth of this creature, such as the appearance of the messenger angel to Zachary, the miraculous conception in Elizabeth and the prophetic canticle of the father, they no doubt assumed that the child would become a great man. When John reached adulthood, he went to live in the desert, away from the world, in order to prepare for his mission to be the forerunner of the Messiah of Israel. Surely many said "What a waste!", Which is not very different from what is heard today when a young man enters the seminary or a young woman goes to a convent.

But John did nothing but fulfill his vocation, because in the desert he would learn to listen to the voice of God. There he discovered that he must be "the friend of the bridegroom" (John 3:29), who would prepare the way for the Messiah. Juan dedicated his entire life to this sole purpose. Out of love and obedience, he submitted himself to the will of God and thus became a clear and evident example to all of the superabundant greatness of the One who came after him.

All of us, like San Juan, were created with a singular purpose. If we seek God in prayer, Scripture and the teachings of the Church, the Holy Spirit will teach us to discover what our mission is. We can all become like St. John and give ourselves from the heart to advance the Kingdom of God and become "friends of the bridegroom", who prostrate themselves at the foot of the cross to give their lives for Christ.

"Take, Lord; I give you my life. Grant me the grace, I beg you, to listen to your call and respond with all my strength and all my heart. "
