Lc 11, 29-32

En aquel tiempo, la multitud se apiñaba alrededor de Jesús y éste comenzó a decirles: "La gente de este tiempo es una gente perversa. Pide una señal, pero no se le dará más señal que la de Jonás. Pues así como Jonás fue una señal para los habitantes de Nínive, lo mismo será el Hijo del hombre para la gente de este tiempo.

Cuando sean juzgados los hombres de este tiempo, la reina del sur se levantará el día del juicio para condenarlos, porque ella vino desde los últimos rincones de la tierra para escuchar la sabiduría de Salomón, y aquí hay uno que es más que Salomón.

Cuando sea juzgada la gente de este tiempo, los hombres de Nínive se levantarán el día del juicio para condenarla, porque ellos se convirtieron con la predicación de Jonás, y aquí hay uno que es más que Jonás''.

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
"This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment 
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation 
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here."

Meditacion:

Hoy se celebra la fiesta de Santa Teresa de Jesus, Doctora en la fe de la Iglesia. Y antes de comentar el evangelio, me gustaria dejarles un recordatorio de esta Santa que vivio en tiempos complicados y que nunca perdio el Don del discernimiento. En tiempos como el que vivimos donde este parece un don perdido, es cuando mas fuerte debemos estar en la oracion para tener un discernimiento correcto del mundo. Aca les dejo algunas enseñanzas para que apliquemos a nuestra vida:

1) Sin amistad con Dios no hay transformación posible (ni personal ni social). La oración es la más profunda, arriesgada y necesaria aventura que puede emprender el ser humano;

2) Toda religiosidad naufraga cuando no es curada por la humanidad de Cristo.

3) La humildad, la audacia y la fortaleza son virtudes esenciales para afrontar las crisis (incluidas las de la Iglesia).

A la oración se suele llegar tarde, como si la seducción de Dios siempre fuera el enamoramiento postrero después de habernos dejado seducir por otras muchas realidades. A veces llegamos demasiado tarde y, entonces, tenemos la impresión de haber malgastado la vida.

Y ahora si, pasemos a meditar el evangelio de hoy

Cuando le pidieron a Jesús que hiciera alguna prueba extraordinaria para creer, él respondió que no se les daría más señal que la del profeta Jonás. ¿Cuál era esa señal de Jonás?

La gente de la ciudad de Nínive llevaba una vida dominada por el pecado. Por eso, Dios envió al profeta Jonás a llevarles un mensaje de arrepentimiento y conversión. Jonás se resistió al principio e incluso trató de huir, pero finalmente, después de pasar tres días en el vientre de una ballena, pronunció apenas unas cuantas palabras y la ciudad entera creyó, se arrepintió de sus maldades y se puso de rodillas en actitud de penitencia y sincero arrepentimiento; así se salvó del juicio de Dios (Jonás 3, 4-6. 10).

Ya es sin duda milagroso que un hombre adulto haya sobrevivido tres días dentro de un gran pez; pero más milagroso es aún que toda la población de Nínive haya aceptado la Palabra de Dios, se haya arrepentido de su vida de pecado y se haya convertido, comenzando por el propio rey (Jonás 3, 6). Esta es la clase de señal que Jesús desea dar a todos los habitantes del mundo.

¿Estás tú, hermano, dispuesto a aceptar la invitación al arrepentimiento? El Señor te invita, pero no te obliga a pasar pruebas difíciles para ganarte su compasión. Todo lo contrario; tal como sucedió en Nínive, solamente espera que tú des los primeros pasos de contrición para empezar a actuar poderosamente en tu corazón. El relato de Jonás nos hace ver la gran misericordia del Padre, incluso hacia un pueblo que el propio profeta consideraba indigno de compasión y mucho menos del favor de Dios.

Es cierto que no es fácil admitir que somos pecadores. A veces, la verdad duele y, tal como observara en cierta ocasión San Juan de la Cruz, uno puede “ir al Sacramento de la Confesión para disculparse más que para acusarse.” Pero la buena noticia es que en cuanto empezamos a arrepentirnos y acercarnos a Dios, el Señor derrama una gracia tras otra en nuestro corazón y nos abraza en nuestra debilidad, para prodigarnos su compasión y capacitarnos para superar la naturaleza caída. Démosle la oportunidad.

“Señor Jesús, mi Salvador, te doy gracias por tu gran misericordia. Sé que he pecado y anhelo recibir tu perdón en la confesión sacramental, y espero experimentar una transformación interior para buscar la santidad.” Amen

Today is celebrated the feast of Saint Teresa of Jesus, Doctor in the faith of the Church. And before commenting on the gospel, I would like to leave you a reminder of this Saint who lived in complicated times and who never lost the gift of discernment. In times like the one where we live where this seems a lost gift, is when we must be stronger in prayer to have a correct discernment of the world. Here are some lessons for us to apply to our lives:

1) Without friendship with God there is no possible transformation (neither personal nor social). Prayer is the deepest, riskiest and necessary adventure that the human being can undertake;

2) All religiosity is shipwrecked when it is not healed by the humanity of Christ.

3) Humility, audacity and strength are essential virtues to face crises (including those of the Church).

Prayer is often late, as if the seduction of God was always the last love after having let ourselves be seduced by many other realities. Sometimes we arrive too late and, then, we have the impression of having wasted our lives.

And now, let's move on to meditate today's gospel

When Jesus was asked to do some extraordinary test to believe, he answered that no further sign would be given to them than that of the prophet Jonah. What was that sign of Jonah?

The people of the city of Nineveh led a life dominated by sin. Therefore, God sent the prophet Jonah to bring them a message of repentance and conversion. Jonah resisted at first and even tried to flee, but finally, after spending three days in the belly of a whale, he spoke just a few words and the entire city believed, repented of their evil and fell on his knees in an attitude of penance and sincere repentance; thus he was saved from the judgment of God (Jonah 3, 4-6, 10).

It is certainly miraculous that an adult man has survived three days inside a large fish; but it is even more miraculous that the entire population of Nineveh has accepted the Word of God, repented of their sinful life and converted, beginning with the king himself (Jonah 3: 6). This is the kind of sign that Jesus wants to give to all the inhabitants of the world.

Are you, brother, willing to accept the invitation to repentance? The Lord invites you, but does not force you to pass difficult tests to earn your compassion. On the contrary; just as it happened in Nineveh, he only expects you to take the first steps of contrition to begin to act powerfully in your heart. The story of Jonah shows us the great mercy of the Father, even towards a people that the prophet himself considered unworthy of compassion and much less of God's favor.

It is true that it is not easy to admit that we are sinners. Sometimes, the truth hurts and, as San Juan de la Cruz once observed, one can "go to the Sacrament of Confession to apologize rather than accuse oneself." But the good news is that as soon as we begin to repent and approach to God, the Lord pours out grace after grace in our hearts and embraces us in our weakness, to lavish his compassion and enable us to overcome fallen nature. Let's give him the opportunity.

"Lord Jesus, my Savior, I thank you for your great mercy. I know that I have sinned and I long to receive your forgiveness in the sacramental confession, and I hope to experience an inner transformation to seek holiness. "Amen
