Por aquellos días, le llegó a Isabel la hora de dar a luz y tuvo un hijo. Cuando sus vecinos y parientes se enteraron de que el Señor le había manifestado tan grande misericordia, se regocijaron con ella.
A los ocho días fueron a circuncidar al niño y le querían poner Zacarías, como su padre; pero la madre se opuso, diciéndoles: "No. Su nombre será Juan". Ellos le decían: "Pero si ninguno de tus parientes se llama así".
Entonces le preguntaron por señas al padre cómo quería que se llamara el niño. Él pidió una tablilla y escribió: "Juan es su nombre". Todos se quedaron extrañados. En ese momento a Zacarías se le soltó la lengua, recobró el habla y empezó a bendecir a Dios.
Un sentimiento de temor se apoderó de los vecinos y en toda la región montañosa de Judea se comentaba este suceso. Cuantos se enteraban de ello se preguntaban impresionados: "¿Qué va a ser de este niño?" Esto lo decían, porque realmente la mano de Dios estaba con él.
El niño se iba desarrollando físicamente y su espíritu se iba fortaleciendo, y vivió en el desierto hasta el día en que se dio a conocer al pueblo de Israel.

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child
she gave birth to a son.
Her neighbors and relatives heard
that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her,
and they rejoiced with her.
When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child,
they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,
but his mother said in reply,
"No. He will be called John."
But they answered her,
"There is no one among your relatives who has this name."
So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.
He asked for a tablet and wrote, "John is his name,"
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
and he spoke blessing God.
Then fear came upon all their neighbors,
and all these matters were discussed
throughout the hill country of Judea.
All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,
"What, then, will this child be?"
For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.
The child grew and became strong in spirit,
and he was in the desert until the day

Meditacion:
Hoy celebramos la fiesta de San Juan el Bautista.
San Juan tiene un pie en el antiguo testamento y otro en el nuevo, es el ultimo profeta y el primero de ellos que conoce y reconoce en Jesus al nuestro salvador.
Curioso destino el de San Juan! Primo de Jesus, dice el evangelio que vivio en el desierto y que para todos era claro que la mano de Dios estaba sobre El.
Naturalmente y desde el vientre de su mama, ya reconoce a Jesus y salta de alegria.
Esa disposicion a reconocer la divinidad de otra persona la poseemos todos pero generalmente no dejamos que el Espiritu Santo crezca y actue en nosotros lo suficiente como para que sea claro.
Tal vez en algun retiro nos sentimos inundados de la paz del Señor pero a poco que salimos del mismo, volvemos a nuestras tareas habituales y nos olvidamos.
Así que, en este gran día de fiesta, honremos a Juan el Bautista por todo lo que hizo por Jesús y por nosotros, pues es verdaderamente uno de los santos más importantes de la Iglesia. Pero nunca olvidemos que la relación entre Juan y Jesús es algo que cada uno de nosotros puede experimentar. Todos podemos saltar de alegría mientras preparamos este mundo para la venida de Cristo Rey.
“Ven, Señor Jesús, y llena mi corazón de alegría.” Amen

Today we celebrate the feast of San Juan el Bautista.
San Juan has one foot in the old testament and another in the new, is the last prophet and the first of them who knows and recognizes in Jesus our savior.
Curious destination of San Juan! Cousin of Jesus, says the gospel that lived in the desert and that for all it was clear that the hand of God was on Him.
Naturally and from the womb of his mother, he recognizes Jesus and jumps with joy.
That disposition to recognize the divinity of another person we all possess but generally we do not let the Holy Spirit grow and act in us enough to make it clear.
Maybe in some retreat we feel flooded with the peace of the Lord but soon after we leave it, we return to our usual tasks and forget.
So, on this great feast day, let us honor John the Baptist for all he did for Jesus and for us, for he is truly one of the most important saints of the Church. But never forget that the relationship between John and Jesus is something that each of us can experience. We can all jump for joy as we prepare this world for the coming of Christ the King.
"Come, Lord Jesus, and fill my heart with joy." Amen
