Lc 14, 25-33

En aquel tiempo, caminaba con Jesús una gran muchedumbre y él, volviéndose a sus discípulos, les dijo:

"Si alguno quiere seguirme y no me prefiere a su padre y a su madre, a su esposa y a sus hijos, a sus hermanos y a sus hermanas, más aún, a sí mismo, no puede ser mi discípulo. Y el que no carga su cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo.

Porque, ¿quién de ustedes, si quiere construir una torre, no se pone primero a calcular el costo, para ver si tiene con qué terminarla? No sea que, después de haber echado los cimientos, no pueda acabarla y todos los que se enteren comiencen a burlarse de él, diciendo: 'Este hombre comenzó a construir y no pudo terminar'.

¿O qué rey que va a combatir a otro rey, no se pone primero a considerar si será capaz de salir con diez mil soldados al encuentro del que viene contra él con veinte mil? Porque si no, cuando el otro esté aún lejos, le enviará una embajada para proponerle las condiciones de paz.

Así pues, cualquiera de ustedes que no renuncie a todos sus bienes, no puede ser mi discípulo".

Great crowds were traveling with Jesus,
and he turned and addressed them,
"If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,
wife and children, brothers and sisters,
and even his own life,
he cannot be my disciple.
Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me
cannot be my disciple.
Which of you wishing to construct a tower
does not first sit down and calculate the cost
to see if there is enough for its completion?

the onlookers should laugh at him and say,
'This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.'
Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down
and decide whether with ten thousand troops

he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.

everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions

Meditacion:

La página del evangelio de hoy, sin duda, es uno de los relatos más apto para ser eliminado del evangelio por lo crudo, e incluso inhumano, que resulta. Habla del discipulado con un estilo espartano y rigorista que provoca espanto. Aunque con la costumbre lo hayamos azucarado, conviene sin embargo que encaremos este pasaje en su ácida novedad. Habla del discipulado señalando, por este orden, primero dos indicadores del auténtico discípulo y, después, la condición que posibilita a todo discípulo seguir a Jesús.

Los dos indicadores están claros. Hay dos comprobantes de que se es auténtico discípulo: Haber resuelto el problema afectivo y asumir derechamente el dolor. Nos detenemos en ellos.

Ordenar rectamente los “amores”. Todo discípulo debe, como Jesús, amar siempre, a todos, con palabras y con obras. Pero en una correcta jerarquía de preferencias. En su cúspide debe estar siempre Jesús, el Señor. El amor hacia Él debe ser comprobable en hechos. Se comprueba en las circunstancias de decisión, cuando se ha de elegir entre Jesús y otras personas o cosas… Cada elección hace evidente el real “ordo amoris” del propio corazón.

Cargar con la cruz. Sabemos qué es la cruz. La hemos sufrido con frecuencia y nos espanta. Cruz es la consecuencia, siempre dolorosa e injusta, del seguimiento. No es penitencia ni castigo merecido por nuestra torpeza o pecado. Es la prueba más irrefutable del amor. Porque amar es sufrir por quien se ama sin huir. Caminar tras las huellas del Señor nos atrae complicaciones y disgustos. Solo un consuelo: Junto a la cruz del discípulo amado también está María.

Las dos parábolas que siguen (la del que se pone a construir una torre y la del rey que entabla batalla contra otro rey) apuntan a la condición que hace posible el seguimiento. Antes de ponerse tras las huellas del Maestro hay que medir las consecuencias de lo que se hace o, lo que es lo mismo, calcular. El discipulado no es equiparable a un arrebato de adolescente, sin pies ni cabeza; no se hace a ciegas o insensatamente… Necesita del previo discernimiento y de la toma de conciencia. Y solo los avisados llegan a entender que, más allá de las excesivas exigencias del Maestro, lo que hay es una carga suave y un yugo llevadero… que son la llave que abre las puertas de una vida auténtica e infinita.

“Gracias, Señor, por llamarme a ser seguidor tuyo.” Amen

Although we have sweetened it with custom, it is nevertheless appropriate that we face this passage in its acidic novelty. He speaks of discipleship by pointing out, in this order, first two indicators of the true disciple and then the condition that enables every disciple to follow Jesus.

The two indicators are clear. There are two proofs that one is a true disciple: Having solved the affective problem and rightly assuming the pain. We stop at them.

Order the "loves" straight. Every disciple must, like Jesus, always love everyone, with words and deeds. But in a correct hierarchy of preferences. Jesus, the Lord, must always be on his cusp. Love towards Him must be verifiable in deeds. It is checked in the circumstances of decision, when you have to choose between Jesus and other people or things ... Each choice makes evident the real "ordo amoris" of the heart itself.

Load with the cross. We know what the cross is. We have suffered it frequently and it scares us. Cruz is the consequence, always painful and unfair, of the follow-up. It is not penance or punishment deserved for our awkwardness or sin. It is the most irrefutable proof of love. Because loving is suffering for those who love without fleeing. Walking in the footsteps of the Lord attracts complications and dislikes. Only one consolation: Next to the cross of the beloved disciple is also Mary.

The two parables that follow (the one that starts building a tower and the king's battle against another king) point to the condition that makes monitoring possible. Before putting yourself in the footsteps of the Master you have to measure the consequences of what is done or, what is the same, calculate. Discipleship is not comparable to an adolescent outburst, without feet or head; it is not done blindly or foolishly ... It needs prior discernment and awareness. And only those warned come to understand that, beyond the excessive demands of the Master, what there is is a soft load and a bearable yoke ... which are the key that opens the doors of an authentic and infinite life.

"Thank you, Lord, for calling me to be your follower." Amen
