Dios de Dios

Jn 14, 7-14

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Si ustedes me conocen a mí, conocen también a mi Padre. Ya desde ahora lo conocen y lo han visto”.

Le dijo Felipe: “Señor, muéstranos al Padre y eso nos basta”. Jesús le replicó: “Felipe, tanto tiempo hace que estoy con ustedes, ¿y todavía no me conoces? Quien me ve a mí, ve al Padre. ¿Entonces por qué dices: ‘Muéstranos al Padre’? ¿O no crees que yo estoy en el Padre y que el Padre está en mí? Las palabras que yo les digo, no las digo por mi propia cuenta. Es el Padre, que permanece en mí, quien hace las obras. Créanme: yo estoy en el Padre y el Padre está en mí. Si no me dan fe a mí, créanlo por las obras.

Yo les aseguro: el que crea en mí, hará las obras que hago yo y las hará aun mayores, porque yo me voy al Padre; y cualquier cosa que pidan en mi nombre, yo la haré para que el Padre sea glorificado en el Hijo. Yo haré cualquier cosa que me pidan en mi nombre’’.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“If you know me, then you will also know my Father.
From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Philip said to Jesus,
“Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time
and you still do not know me, Philip?
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own.
The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,
or else, believe because of the works themselves.
Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,
and will do greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father.
And whatever you ask in my name, I will do,
so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”

Meditacion:

Probablemente todos queremos llegar a contemplar y conocer a nuestro Padre celestial. Es un deseo tan profundo que a veces ni siquiera sabemos que está ahí; pero así fue como Dios nos creó: con el deseo innato de conocerlo, para que todos queramos buscarlo.

No obstante, para muchas personas Dios es un ser demasiado etéreo o abstracto como para conocerlo. Su trono está en el cielo y nosotros vivimos en la tierra; sus pensamientos y sus formas de actuar son tan sublimes y los nuestros tan terrenales. Podemos percibir algo de su naturaleza en los descubrimientos científicos o en la belleza del arte clásico, pero estas no son más que observaciones que no llegan a conformar una relación con la divinidad. Entonces, ¿es realmente posible conocer al Creador del universo?

La respuesta es sí. Claro que podemos conocerlo y ya lo hacemos porque conocemos a Cristo Jesús. Como proclamamos cada domingo en la Misa, Jesús es “Dios de Dios, Luz de Luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero”. Los discípulos aún no sabían esto mientras el Señor estaba con ellos, y por eso Felipe le pidió que les mostrara al Padre. Tal vez pensaba que Jesús les daría una visión nueva o, mejor aún, una breve vislumbre de la gloria de Dios, pero no entendían que el Padre ya se les había revelado en la Persona de Cristo. ¡Qué felicidad deben haber sentido cuando finalmente comprendieron que Dios había estado con ellos todo el tiempo por medio de su Hijo unigénito!

Nosotros conocemos al Padre porque conocemos a Jesús. Y como sucede con cualquier otra persona, todos podemos conocerlo aún más. Esto no significa que vayamos a descubrir algo nuevo respecto al Padre, aunque eso no sería imposible. Dios tiene su manera de cuestionar lo que sabemos sobre las cosas, es decir, a veces nos hacer ver algo que ya conocemos, como el gran amor que nos tiene o lo glorioso que él es, pero nos lleva a experimentarlo de una manera mucho más profunda. Lo sorprendente es que, pese a que nos hayamos esforzado por ser fieles Dios a lo largo de los años, siempre hay algo nuevo que aprender, algo más que experimentar.

Pidámosle al Señor que la petición de Felipe tenga resonancia en nuestro corazón.

“Señor Jesús, te ruego que me muestres al Padre de una forma más profunda.” Amen

We all probably want to come to contemplate and know our heavenly Father. It is such a deep desire that sometimes we don't even know it's there; But this is how God created us: with the innate desire to know him, so that we all want to search for him.

However, for many people God is too ethereal or abstract a being to know him. His throne is in heaven and we live on earth; their thoughts and their ways of acting are so sublime and ours so earthly. We can perceive something of its nature in scientific discoveries or in the beauty of classical art, but these are only observations that do not form a relationship with divinity. So is it really possible to know the Creator of the universe?

The answer is yes. Of course we can know him and we already do it because we know Jesus Christ. As we proclaim every Sunday at Mass, Jesus is "God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God." The disciples did not yet know this while the Lord was with them, and so Philip asked him to show them to the Father. Perhaps they thought that Jesus would give them a new vision or, better yet, a brief glimpse of the glory of God, but they did not understand that the Father had already revealed himself to them in the Person of Christ. What happiness they must have felt when they finally understood that God had been with them all along through his only begotten Son!

We know the Father because we know Jesus. And as with anyone else, we can all know him even more. This does not mean that we are going to discover something new about the Father, although that would not be impossible. God has his way of questioning what we know about things, that is, sometimes he makes us see something that we already know, such as the great love he has for us or how glorious he is, but he leads us to experience it in a much more deep. The surprising thing is that, despite the fact that we have strived to be faithful God throughout the years, there is always something new to learn, something more to experience.

Let us ask the Lord that Philip's request has resonance in our hearts.

"Lord Jesus, I beg you to show me the Father in a deeper way." Amen
