Lc 12, 39-48

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Fíjense en esto: Si un padre de familia supiera a qué hora va a venir el ladrón, estaría vigilando y no dejaría que se le metiera por un boquete en su casa. Pues también ustedes estén preparados, porque a la hora en que menos lo piensen, vendrá el Hijo del hombre”.

Entonces Pedro le preguntó a Jesús: “¿Dices esta parábola sólo por nosotros o por todos?”

El Señor le respondió: “Supongan que un administrador, puesto por su amo al frente de la servidumbre con el encargo de repartirles a su tiempo los alimentos, se porta con fidelidad y prudencia. Dichoso ese siervo, si el amo, a su llegada, lo encuentra cumpliendo con su deber. Yo les aseguro que lo pondrá al frente de todo lo que tiene.

Pero si ese siervo piensa: ‘Mi amo tardará en llegar’ y empieza a maltratar a los otros siervos y siervas, a comer, a beber y a embriagarse, el día menos pensado y a la hora más inesperada llegará su amo y lo castigará severamente y le hará correr la misma suerte de los desleales.

El siervo que conociendo la voluntad de su amo, no haya preparado ni hecho lo que debía, recibirá muchos azotes; pero el que, sin conocerla, haya hecho algo digno de castigo, recibirá pocos.

Al que mucho se le da, se le exigirá mucho; y al que mucho se le confía, se le exigirá mucho más.

LK 12:39-48

Jesus said to his disciples: 
“Be sure of this:
if the master of the house had known the hour
when the thief was coming,
he would not have let his house be broken into.
You also must be prepared,
for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

Then Peter said,
“Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?”
And the Lord replied,
“Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward
whom the master will put in charge of his servants
to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?
Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.
Truly, I say to you, he will put him
in charge of all his property.
But if that servant says to himself,
‘My master is delayed in coming,’
and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants,
to eat and drink and get drunk,
then that servant’s master will come
on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour
and will punish the servant severely
and assign him a place with the unfaithful.
That servant who knew his master’s will
but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will
shall be beaten severely;
and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will
but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating
shall be beaten only lightly. 
Much will be required of the person entrusted with much,
and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

Meditacion:

Puede parecer extraño que el Señor Jesús se compare con un ladrón cuando habla sobre su segunda venida, y también que utilice el ejemplo de un amo severo que castiga a sus sirvientes por no estar preparados. Tal vez lo hizo como advertencia para las personas que descuidaban su relación con Dios. Pero, ¿qué sucede con aquellos que hemos hecho lo mejor posible para seguirlo? ¿Deberíamos estar preocupados también?

Ciertamente no, el Señor no quiere que el Reino nos cause temor.

No hay duda de que hay un elemento de misterio que rodea su segunda venida, porque aun si somos muy espirituales, es algo que nos va a sorprender. Sabemos que vendrá “en las nubes del cielo con gran poder y gloria” (Mateo 24, 30), pero no sabemos exactamente cómo se verá ni cuándo va a suceder. Lo único que es seguro es que cuando lo infinito se encuentre con lo finito la vida cotidiana se verá interrumpida.

Debido a que el regreso del Señor sorprenderá a todos, podríamos suponer que no hay forma de prepararse para ese momento. Cristo nos dice que toda la vida cristiana depende de estar bien preparados y que lo mejor es practicarlo a diario; pero no con la expectativa de alguien que teme un desastre inminente, sino con la preparación de un discípulo que vive con fe y confianza. Esa clase de preparación implica estar atento y ser flexible, estar dispuesto a cambiar de planes y confiar que Dios tiene un plan perfecto, aunque a veces misterioso, para nuestra vida.

Así que procura disponerte a escuchar lo que el Señor quiera decirte, no solamente a través de su palabra, sino también de la suave voz del Espíritu Santo o a través de las acciones y palabras de otras personas. Durante el día, presta atención a las interrupciones que surjan, aquellas solicitudes inesperadas de familiares, amigos o compañeros de trabajo que el Señor puede usar para darte una oportunidad de servirlo. No tienes que esperar hasta que sea el fin del mundo para verlo; él está llamando a tu puerta en este momento. ¡Ábrele, y deja que entre a cenar contigo!

“Señor Jesús, quiero estar preparado para recibirte en mi vida.”

It may seem strange that the Lord Jesus compares himself to a thief when speaking of his second coming, and also uses the example of a severe master who punishes his servants for not being prepared. Perhaps he did it as a warning to people who neglected their relationship with God. But what about those of us who have done our best to follow it? Should we be worried too?

Certainly not, the Lord does not want the Kingdom to cause us fear.

There is no doubt that there is an element of mystery surrounding his second coming, because even if we are very spiritual, it is something that will surprise us. We know that it will come “in the clouds of heaven with great power and glory” (Matthew 24:30), but we do not know exactly what it will look like or when it will happen. The only thing that is certain is that when the infinite meets the finite, everyday life will be interrupted.

Since the Lord's return will surprise everyone, we might assume that there is no way to prepare for that moment. Christ tells us that the entire Christian life depends on being well prepared and that it is best to practice it daily; but not with the expectation of someone who fears impending disaster, but with the preparation of a disciple who lives in faith and trust. That kind of preparation involves being mindful and flexible, willing to change plans, and trusting that God has a perfect, if sometimes mysterious, plan for our lives.

So try to be ready to listen to what the Lord wants to say to you, not only through his word, but also through the soft voice of the Holy Spirit or through the actions and words of other people. During the day, pay attention to any interruptions that arise, those unexpected requests from family, friends or coworkers that the Lord can use to give you an opportunity to serve Him. You don't have to wait until the end of the world to see it; he is knocking on your door right now. Open it, and let it come in to dinner with you!

"Lord Jesus, I want to be prepared to receive you into my life."
