En aquel tiempo, Jesús entró en Jericó, y al ir atravesando la ciudad, sucedió que un hombre llamado Zaqueo, jefe de publicanos y rico, trataba de conocer a Jesús, pero la gente se lo impedía, porque Zaqueo era de baja estatura. Entonces corrió y se subió a un árbol para verlo cuando pasara por ahí. Al llegar a ese lugar, Jesús levantó los ojos y le dijo: “Zaqueo, bájate pronto, porque hoy tengo que hospedarme en tu casa”
Él bajó enseguida y lo recibió muy contento. Al ver esto, comenzaron todos a murmurar diciendo: “Ha entrado a hospedarse en casa de un pecador”.
Zaqueo, poniéndose de pie, dijo a Jesús: “Mira, Señor, voy a dar a los pobres la mitad de mis bienes, y si he defraudado a alguien, le restituiré cuatro veces más”. Jesús le dijo: “Hoy ha llegado la salvación a esta casa, porque también él es hijo de Abraham, y el Hijo del hombre ha venido a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido”.

Gospel
At that time Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.
Now a man there named Zacchaeus,
who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,
was seeking to see who Jesus was;
but he could not see him because of the crowd,
for he was short in stature.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus,
who was about to pass that way.
When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said,
“Zacchaeus, come down quickly,
for today I must stay at your house.”
And he came down quickly and received him with joy.
When they saw this, they began to grumble, saying,
“He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord,
“Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor,
and if I have extorted anything from anyone
I shall repay it four times over.”
And Jesus said to him,
“Today salvation has come to this house
because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek
and to save what was lost.”

Meditacion:
Trata de imaginar esta escena por un momento: tú eres Zaqueo el cobrador de impuestos, y escuchas que Jesús está en tu pueblo. Entonces sales corriendo de tu casa y te subes en un árbol para verlo; tal vez te raspas las rodillas mientras trepas, pero no te importa. ¡Tienes que ver a este hombre! De pronto, él te ve a ti y te habla directamente. Sus palabras te conmueven tanto que prometes dar la mitad de tus posesiones a los pobres y restituir cuatro veces más a aquellos a los que hayas defraudado.
Ahora, imagina que el Señor te dice: “Está bien, no tenías que hacer tanto como subir a ese árbol, y ciertamente no debes entregar tanto dinero. Simplemente devuelve lo que debes y asegúrate de asistir a la sinagoga cada sábado. No quiero que hagas más de lo necesario.”
Jesús nunca reaccionaría de esa manera. No es que él demandara una restitución extravagante como un castigo a los actos deshonestos de Zaqueo ni tampoco que necesitara que éste equilibrara la balanza de una forma extrema. No, él vio que Zaqueo estaba realizando un gesto sincero y voluntario, estaba actuando libremente en respuesta al amor que Jesús tenía por él (Lucas 19, 9). Su restitución fue un acto de agradecimiento, no una obligación.
Esa es la forma en que funciona la misericordia de Dios, es tan abundante y generosa que nos cambia en lo más profundo de nuestro corazón y nos convence a amar y dar tan libremente como el Señor nos ha dado a nosotros. Como dijo San Pablo: “Se ha apoderado de nosotros” de una forma en que la lógica no puede hacerlo (2 Corintios 5, 14).
Dedica algo de tiempo en tu oración para regocijarte en ese amor extravagante, extremo e ilimitado que Jesús tiene por ti. Ponte en los zapatos de Zaqueo y abre tu corazón para que tu encuentro con el Señor te mueva a alabarlo y adorarlo. “¡Cristo me ama! ¡Cristo me perdona! ¡El Señor me recibe con los brazos abiertos!” Que estas verdades se aniden hoy en tu corazón y te ayuden a amar con la misma libertad y generosidad con la que eres amado.
“Señor, te ruego que me muestres tu amor y misericordia. Ven, Señor Jesús y enséñame a ser igual de generoso que tú.” Amen

Try to imagine this scene for a moment: you are Zacchaeus the tax collector, and you hear that Jesus is in your town. So you run out of your house and climb a tree to see it; Maybe you scrape your knees while climbing, but you don't care. You have to see this man! Suddenly, he sees you and speaks directly to you. His words move you so much that you promise to give half of your possessions to the poor and to repay four times more to those you have defrauded.
Now imagine the Lord saying to you, “Okay, you didn't have to do as much as climb that tree, and you certainly shouldn't hand over that much money. Just pay back what you owe and be sure to attend synagogue every Saturday. I don't want you to do more than necessary. "
Jesus would never react that way. Not that he demanded extravagant restitution as a punishment for Zacchaeus' dishonest acts, nor that he needed Zacchaeus to balance the scales in an extreme way. No, he saw that Zacchaeus was making a sincere and voluntary gesture, he was acting freely in response to the love that Jesus had for him (Luke 19, 9). His restitution was an act of gratitude, not an obligation.
That is the way God's mercy works, it is so abundant and generous that it changes us in the depths of our hearts and convinces us to love and give as freely as the Lord has given us. As Saint Paul said: “It has taken hold of us” in a way that logic cannot (2 Corinthians 5:14).
Spend some time in your prayer to rejoice in that extravagant, extreme and limitless love that Jesus has for you. Put yourself in Zacchaeus' shoes and open your heart so that your encounter with the Lord moves you to praise and adore him. "Christ loves me! Christ forgives me! The Lord welcomes me with open arms! " May these truths nestle in your heart today and help you to love with the same freedom and generosity with which you are loved.
“Lord, I beg you to show me your love and mercy. Come Lord Jesus and teach me to be just as generous as you. " Amen
