Orar siempre

Lc 18, 1-8

En aquel tiempo, para enseñar a sus discípulos la necesidad de orar siempre y sin desfallecer, Jesús les propuso esta parábola:

“En cierta ciudad había un juez que no temía a Dios ni respetaba a los hombres. Vivía en aquella misma ciudad una viuda que acudía a él con frecuencia para decirle: ‘Hazme justicia contra mi adversario’.

Por mucho tiempo, el juez no le hizo caso, pero después se dijo: ‘Aunque no temo a Dios ni respeto a los hombres, sin embargo, por la insistencia de esta viuda, voy a hacerle justicia para que no me siga molestando’ ”.

Dicho esto, Jesús comentó: “Si así pensaba el juez injusto, ¿creen acaso que Dios no hará justicia a sus elegidos, que claman a él día y noche, y que los hará esperar? Yo les digo que les hará justicia sin tardar. Pero, cuando venga el Hijo del hombre, ¿creen que encontrará fe sobre la tierra?”

LK 18:1-8

Jesus told his disciples a parable
about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. 
He said, “There was a judge in a certain town
who neither feared God nor respected any human being. 
And a widow in that town used to come to him and say,
‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’
For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought,
‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, 
because this widow keeps bothering me
I shall deliver a just decision for her
lest she finally come and strike me.’” 
The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. 
Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones
who call out to him day and night? 
Will he be slow to answer them? 
I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. 
But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Meditacion:

¿Te ha sucedido que, cuando escuchas la parábola de hoy te imaginas a una anciana regordeta y regañona? Podrías comparar su obstinación con la insistencia de un bulldog o la interminable molestia de un disco rayado. Hoy, cuando leas el Evangelio y pienses en ella, intenta algo diferente: mírala como un modelo de confianza, complacencia y valentía.

Valentía: Esta viuda no temía ni al adversario ni al fastidio del juez, y exigía sin temor que se le hiciera justicia. Se requiere fortaleza para continuar luchando cuando las cosas no salen como uno espera, y surge la tentación de perder la esperanza cuando las plegarias no son contestadas de inmediato. Pero el “mucho tiempo” en que el juez se negó a atender la petición de la viuda no la detuvo. Ella siguió recordándole su petición, y así puede enseñarnos el valor de seguir buscando a Dios aunque nos encontremos con obstáculos.

Confianza: La viuda estaba convencida de que tenía razón, y de que Dios la protegía . Entonces, cuando se enfrentó con un obstáculo en el camino, como el juez indolente, no se rindió, porque sabía que Dios estaba de su lado y el saberlo le dio valentía. De igual manera, cada uno de nosotros puede confiar en que Dios nos protege personalmente.

Expectativa: Mientras esperaba el momento de Dios, la viuda demuestra un cierto nivel de tranquilidad, pues confiaba en que Dios le haría justicia. De igual forma Jesús nos promete que si perseveramos en la oración y la confianza en el Padre, encontraremos paz mientras esperamos, de modo que podemos tener tranquilidad sabiendo que estamos haciendo lo que Dios nos pide. El resto depende de él, y podemos confiar en que nos responderá.

Jesús finaliza la parábola preguntando si, cuando él vuelva, encontrará algo de fe en la tierra. Esta no fue una pregunta arbitraria añadida al final de la parábola como una idea adicional. La clase de fe que el Señor espera es la fe de esta viuda perseverante: una que muestra valentía, confianza y expectativa. Cuando tenemos una fe como esta, nuestras oraciones no son ruegos desesperados, sino peticiones que hacemos con alegría expectante. Así que, cuando presentes tus necesidades a Dios, imita a esta viuda insistente.

“Señor Jesús, te presento mis necesidades con valentía y confianza, confío en ti aun cuando tengo que esperar a ver tu voluntad.” Amen

Has it happened to you that when you listen to today's parable you imagine a plump and nagging old woman? You could compare their stubbornness to the prodding of a bulldog or the endless annoyance of a broken record. When you read the Gospel today and think about her, try something different: look at her as a model of confidence, complacency, and courage.

Courage: This widow feared neither the adversary nor the annoyance of the judge, and demanded without fear that justice be done to her. It takes strength to keep fighting when things don't go as expected, and the temptation to lose hope arises when prayers aren't immediately answered. But the "long time" in which the judge refused to comply with the widow's request did not stop her. She kept reminding him of his request, and thus can teach us the value of continuing to seek God even when we encounter obstacles.

Confidence: The widow was convinced that she was right, and that God was protecting her. So when she faced an obstacle along the way, like the indolent judge, she did not give up, because she knew that God was on her side and knowing it gave her courage. Likewise, each of us can trust God to protect us personally.

Expectation: While waiting for God's moment, the widow shows a certain level of calm, trusting that God would do her justice. In the same way, Jesus promises us that if we persevere in prayer and trust in the Father, we will find peace while we wait, so that we can have peace of mind knowing that we are doing what God asks of us. The rest is up to him, and we can trust him to answer us.

Jesus ends the parable by asking if, when he returns, he will find any faith on earth. This was not an arbitrary question added to the end of the parable as an additional idea. The kind of faith the Lord expects is the faith of this persevering widow - one that shows courage, confidence, and expectation. When we have faith like this, our prayers are not desperate pleas, but requests that we make with expectant joy. So when you present your needs to God, imitate this pushy widow.

"Lord Jesus, I present my needs to you with courage and confidence, I trust you even when I have to wait to see your will." Amen
