Mt 21, 23-27

En aquellos días, mientras Jesús enseñaba en el templo, se le acercaron los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo y le preguntaron: “¿Con qué derecho haces todas estas cosas? ¿Quién te ha dado semejante autoridad?”

Jesús les respondió: “Yo también les voy a hacer una pregunta, y si me la responden, les diré con qué autoridad hago lo que hago: ¿De dónde venía el bautismo de Juan, del cielo o de la tierra?”

Ellos pensaron para sus adentros: “Si decimos que del cielo, él nos va a decir: ‘Entonces, ¿por qué no le creyeron?’ Si decimos que de los hombres, se nos va a echar encima el pueblo, porque todos tienen a Juan por un profeta”. Entonces respondieron: “No lo sabemos”.

Jesús les replicó: “Pues tampoco yo les digo con qué autoridad hago lo que hago”.

MT 21:23-27

When Jesus had come into the temple area,
the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him
as he was teaching and said,
“By what authority are you doing these things? 
And who gave you this authority?” 
Jesus said to them in reply,
“I shall ask you one question, and if you answer it for me,
then I shall tell you by what authority I do these things. 
Where was John’s baptism from?
Was it of heavenly or of human origin?” 
They discussed this among themselves and said,
“If we say ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say to us,
‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 
But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we fear the crowd,
for they all regard John as a prophet.” 
So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” 
He himself said to them,
“Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Meditacion:

Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos cuestionaron el derecho de Jesús a enseñar en el Templo. Su oposición era comprensible, acababa de entrar en el Templo como si él fuera su dueño, había tirado las mesas de los cambistas de dinero y los había echado fuera. Luego sanó y enseñó a la multitud que se reunió a su alrededor. Debe haber sido una escena desconcertante: un extraño de Galilea colocándose el manto de autoridad que le pertenecía únicamente a los sacerdotes que gobernaban ese lugar santo. ¿Quién se creía que era?

Jesús sabía exactamente quién era él: ¡el Mesías! Pero también sabía que estos líderes jamás creerían si les decía que él era el cumplimiento de todas las profecías del Antiguo Testamento y que su autoridad venía de Dios mismo. Entonces, le dio la vuelta a la situación y los confrontó trayendo a colación a Juan el Bautista, a quien ellos habían rechazado.

Eso sucedió entonces y sucede ahora. A diferencia de los ancianos en Jerusalén, nosotros sí sabemos quién es Jesús. ¿Qué podría decirnos este pasaje a nosotros?

Pareciera que mucho. Este relato nos da una oportunidad para considerar lo que significa la autoridad de Jesús en nuestra vida. Nosotros proclamamos que él es el Señor, pero la fe nos dice que no es un cruel dictador que exige obediencia incuestionable por parte de sus súbditos y castiga sin misericordia sus transgresiones. No, su autoridad existe dentro del contexto del amor. Obedecemos sus enseñanzas porque sabemos que él solo tiene cosas buenas para nosotros; lo seguimos porque nos muestra el camino para vivir su propio amor.

En última instancia, la autoridad de Jesús es un don, no una carga. Es un don de su protección contra el mal y de su gracia para moldearnos a su propia imagen.

Jesús nunca forzará su voluntad sobre ti. Te está invitando a tener una relación con él, una relación marcada por la confianza y el amor, humildad y entrega. Así que no dudes en entregarle cada preocupación, cada relación difícil y cada tentación. Pon cada área de tu vida bajo su gobierno, y permite que él te llene con su paz.

“Señor, deseo que mis acciones reflejen tu autoridad amorosa en mi vida.” Amen

The chief priests and elders questioned Jesus' right to teach in the Temple. His opposition was understandable, he had just entered the Temple as if he were its owner, he had thrown the money exchangers' tables and thrown them out. Then he healed and taught the crowd that gathered around him. It must have been a disconcerting scene: a stranger from Galilee donning the mantle of authority that belonged only to the priests who ruled that holy place. Who would think he was?

Jesus knew exactly who he was: the Messiah! But he also knew that these leaders would never believe if he told them that he was the fulfillment of all the Old Testament prophecies and that his authority came from God himself. So, he turned the situation around and confronted them by bringing up John the Baptist, whom they had rejected.

That happened then and it happens now. Unlike the elders in Jerusalem, we do know who Jesus is. What could this passage tell us?

It seems like a lot. This account gives us an opportunity to consider what the authority of Jesus means in our lives. We proclaim that he is Lord, but faith tells us that he is not a cruel dictator who demands unquestioning obedience from his subjects and mercilessly punishes their transgressions. No, your authority exists within the context of love. We obey his teachings because we know that he only has good things for us; We follow him because he shows us the way to live his own love.

Ultimately, the authority of Jesus is a gift, not a burden. It is a gift of his protection against evil and of his grace to mold us in his own image.

Jesus will never force his will on you. He is inviting you to have a relationship with him, a relationship marked by trust and love, humility and dedication. So don't hesitate to hand over every worry, every difficult relationship, and every temptation. Put every area of ​​your life under his rule, and allow him to fill you with his peace.

"Lord, I want my actions to reflect your loving authority in my life." Amen
