En aquel tiempo, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret, a una virgen desposada con un varón de la estirpe de David, llamado José. La virgen se llamaba María.
Entró el ángel a donde ella estaba y le dijo: “Alégrate, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo”. Al oír estas palabras, ella se preocupó mucho y se preguntaba qué querría decir semejante saludo.
El ángel le dijo: “No temas, María, porque has hallado gracia ante Dios. Vas a concebir y a dar a luz un hijo y le pondrás por nombre Jesús. Él será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo; el Señor Dios le dará el trono de David, su padre, y él reinará sobre la casa de Jacob por los siglos y su reinado no tendrá fin”.
María le dijo entonces al ángel: “¿Cómo podrá ser esto, puesto que yo permanezco virgen?” El ángel le contestó: “El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra. Por eso, el Santo, que va a nacer de ti, será llamado Hijo de Dios. Ahí tienes a tu parienta Isabel, que a pesar de su vejez, ha concebido un hijo y ya va en el sexto mes la que llamaban estéril, porque no hay nada imposible para Dios”. María contestó: “Yo soy la esclava del Señor; cúmplase en mí lo que me has dicho”. Y el ángel se retiró de su presencia.

Gospel
The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.

Mary set out
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Most blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”
And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.”

Meditacion:
María “se preocupó mucho” tanto por la repentina e inesperada aparición del ángel como por sus palabras. Pero él la tranquilizó: “No temas”, le dijo (Lucas 1, 29. 30). ¡Qué tranquilizador debe haber sido ese mensaje!
Retrocedamos hasta el año 1531. La Virgen María se apareció a Juan Diego en el cerro Tepeyac en Ciudad de México y le pidió que fuera a donde el obispo para solicitar que se construyera una capilla ahí en su honor. El obispo pidió una señal, y María prometió a Juan Diego que se la daría al día siguiente. Sin embargo, el tío de Juan se enfermó por lo que él no pudo acudir a su cita con la Virgen. Preocupado por su tío, sintió temor por no ir cuando dijo que lo haría. Pero cuando María se le apareció nuevamente, le dijo: “No se turbe tu corazón, ¿acaso no estoy yo aquí, que soy tu Madre?”
Probablemente tú conoces el resto de la historia. María le dio a Juan Diego una señal para el obispo: rosas que florecieron en el invierno y que él colocó en su tilma, y cuando cayeron en el suelo, la hermosa imagen de Nuestra Señora apareció en la tilma. Al ver la imagen, el obispo aceptó la solicitud de la Virgen.
Estos relatos nos recuerdan que a pesar de que el miedo es una reacción natural, la forma en que lo enfrentamos es más importante. La respuesta que María dio al ángel, “cúmplase en mí lo que me has dicho”, fue una declaración de confianza en el Señor (Lucas 1, 38). Juan Diego también reaccionó con confianza, sin permitir que el temor o la preocupación le impidieran reunirse con ella nuevamente o ir donde el obispo.
¿Cómo enfrentas tú el temor? Es fácil permitir que el miedo te paralice y te impida hacer lo que Dios te pide que hagas. Pero María y Juan Diego nos muestran cómo reaccionar: con confianza y la decisión de ir hacia adelante, a pesar de nuestros miedos. Dios entiende tu temor, pero él no quiere que eso te paralice. Así que en esta fiesta, recuerda las palabras del ángel a María y guárdalas en tu corazón: “No temas” (Lucas 1, 30). El Dios que te ama, que ha caminado a tu lado en cada paso que das, no te abandonará.
“Amado Señor, aunque pueda tener miedo, ¡mi corazón siempre confiará en ti!”

Mary "was very concerned" both by the sudden and unexpected appearance of the angel and by his words. But he reassured her: "Do not be afraid," he told her (Luke 1, 29, 30). How reassuring that message must have been!
Let's go back to the year 1531. The Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City and asked him to go to the bishop to request that a chapel be built there in his honor. The bishop asked for a sign, and Maria promised Juan Diego that she would give it to him the next day. However, Juan's uncle became ill so he could not keep his appointment with the Virgin. Worried about his uncle, he was afraid not to go when he said he would. But when Mary appeared to him again, she said: "Let not your heart be troubled, am I not here, who am your Mother?"
You probably know the rest of the story. Mary gave Juan Diego a sign for the bishop: roses that bloomed in the winter and that he placed on his tilma, and when they fell on the ground, the beautiful image of Our Lady appeared on the tilma. Seeing the image, the bishop accepted the Virgin's request.
These stories remind us that although fear is a natural reaction, how we deal with it is more important. The response that Mary gave to the angel, "Let what you have told me be fulfilled in me," was a declaration of confidence in the Lord (Luke 1:38). Juan Diego also reacted with confidence, not allowing fear or worry to prevent him from meeting her again or going to the bishop.
How do you deal with fear? It's easy to allow fear to paralyze you and stop you from doing what God asks you to do. But María and Juan Diego show us how to react: with confidence and the decision to move forward, despite our fears. God understands your fear, but he doesn't want it to paralyze you. So on this feast, remember the angel's words to Mary and keep them in your heart: “Do not be afraid” (Luke 1, 30). The God who loves you, who has walked by your side in every step you take, will not abandon you.
"Dear Lord, even though I may be afraid, my heart will always trust you!"
