En aquel tiempo, Jesús recorría todas las ciudades y los pueblos, enseñando en las sinagogas, predicando el Evangelio del Reino y curando toda enfermedad y dolencia. Al ver a las multitudes, se compadecía de ellas, porque estaban extenuadas y desamparadas, como ovejas sin pastor. Entonces dijo a sus discípulos: “La cosecha es mucha y los trabajadores, pocos. Rueguen, por lo tanto, al dueño de la mies que envíe trabajadores a sus campos”.
Después, llamando a sus doce discípulos, les dio poder para expulsar a los espíritus impuros y curar toda clase de enfermedades y dolencias. Les dijo: “Vayan en busca de las ovejas perdidas de la casa de Israel. Vayan y proclamen por el camino que ya se acerca el Reino de los cielos. Curen a los leprosos y demás enfermos; resuciten a los muertos y echen fuera a los demonios. Gratuitamente han recibido este poder; ejérzanlo, pues, gratuitamente”.

Gospel
Jesus went around to all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues,
proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness.
At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them
because they were troubled and abandoned,
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.”
Then he summoned his Twelve disciples
and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out
and to cure every disease and every illness.
Jesus sent out these Twelve after instructing them thus,
“Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Cure the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse lepers, drive out demons.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

Meditacion:
Durante siglos los judíos devotos habían escuchado decir a los profetas que llegaría el tiempo en que todas las faltas serían reparadas: Dios los sanaría de sus sufrimientos, proveería para cada necesidad y destruiría a sus enemigos. Ahora Jesús ha enviado a sus apóstoles con las noticias de que la espera ha llegado a su fin. ¡Dios está en camino!
Pero quienes escucharon la proclamación de los apóstoles vivían bajo circunstancias difíciles: ocupación romana, altos impuestos y opresión religiosa. De pronto vienen estos pescadores galileos, proclamando un reino celestial. No había ninguna promesa de liberación de Roma, no había ninguna esperanza de un nuevo “hijo de David” que heredara el trono de Israel. Más bien, era la promesa de sanidad y alegría que los profetas habían anunciado, en el sorprendente escenario de la Palestina ocupada.
Algunas de las personas recibieron a los apóstoles y su mensaje, muchos fueron sanados o liberados de la posesión demoníaca. Otros vieron su fe renovada y su esperanza restaurada, a pesar de que sus problemas permanecían. Pero, algunos no podían aceptar sus palabras. El contraste entre el mensaje de los apóstoles y sus circunstancias parecía demasiado grande.
Tal vez el mensaje del Evangelio puede sentirse distante para nosotros también en la actualidad. Anhelamos la libertad financiera, el fin de la guerra o un tiempo de paz y prosperidad. Pero Jesús no promete nada de eso. Más bien, nos dice que ya se acerca el Reino de los cielos. Y así como le dijeron los apóstoles a los judíos de su tiempo, él nos dice hoy que su reino es mucho mejor que los deseos terrenales.
Hoy termina la primera semana de Adviento, ahora es un buen momento para abrir tu corazón a este reino. Mientras te preparas externamente para la Navidad, —encender las velas de la corona de Adviento, decorar tu casa, colocar el árbol y el pesebre—, pregúntale al Espíritu Santo de qué forma está preparando tu corazón. Busca las señales de este reino en tu vida: Más fidelidad en tu oración, un corazón más dócil, obediencia más profunda a sus mandamientos y un amor más grande por tu prójimo. Cuando identifiques alguna de estas señales, ¡alégrate! Es una señal de que el Reino de los cielos está cerca.

For centuries devout Jews had heard the prophets say that the time would come when all faults would be repaired: God would heal them of their sufferings, provide for every need, and destroy their enemies. Now Jesus has sent his apostles with the news that the waiting has come to an end. God is on the way!
But those who heard the proclamation of the apostles lived under difficult circumstances: Roman occupation, high taxes, and religious oppression. Suddenly these Galilean fishermen come, proclaiming a heavenly kingdom. There was no promise of liberation from Rome, there was no hope for a new “son of David” to inherit the throne of Israel. Rather, it was the promise of healing and joy that the prophets had announced, in the surprising setting of occupied Palestine.
Some of the people received the apostles and their message, many were healed or released from demon possession. Others saw their faith renewed and their hope restored, even though their problems remained. But, some could not accept his words. The contrast between the apostles' message and their circumstances seemed too great.
Perhaps the Gospel message can feel distant to us today as well. We long for financial freedom, the end of war, or a time of peace and prosperity. But Jesus doesn't promise any of that. Rather, it tells us that the Kingdom of Heaven is drawing near. And just as the apostles told the Jews of his time, he tells us today that his kingdom is much better than earthly desires.
Today ends the first week of Advent, now is a good time to open your heart to this kingdom. As you prepare externally for Christmas — lighting the Advent wreath candles, decorating your house, setting up the tree and manger — ask the Holy Spirit how He is preparing your heart. Look for the signs of this kingdom in your life: more faithfulness in your prayer, a more docile heart, deeper obedience to his commandments and a greater love for your neighbor. When you spot any of these signs, rejoice! It is a sign that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.
