Lc 1, 57-66

Por aquellos días, le llegó a Isabel la hora de dar a luz y tuvo un hijo. Cuando sus vecinos y parientes se enteraron de que el Señor le había manifestado tan grande misericordia, se regocijaron con ella.

A los ocho días fueron a circuncidar al niño y le querían poner Zacarías, como su padre; pero la madre se opuso, diciéndoles: “No. Su nombre será Juan”. Ellos le decían: “Pero si ninguno de tus parientes se llama así”.

Entonces le preguntaron por señas al padre cómo quería que se llamara el niño. Él pidió una tablilla y escribió: “Juan es su nombre”. Todos se quedaron extrañados. En ese momento a Zacarías se le soltó la lengua, recobró el habla y empezó a bendecir a Dios.

Un sentimiento de temor se apoderó de los vecinos, y en toda la región montañosa de Judea se comentaba este suceso. Cuantos se enteraban de ello se preguntaban impresionados: “¿Qué va a ser de este niño?” Esto lo decían, porque realmente la mano de Dios estaba con él.

LK 1:57-66

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child
she gave birth to a son. 
Her neighbors and relatives heard
that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her,
and they rejoiced with her. 
When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child,
they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,
but his mother said in reply,
“No. He will be called John.” 
But they answered her,
“There is no one among your relatives who has this name.” 
So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. 
He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,”
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
and he spoke blessing God.
Then fear came upon all their neighbors,
and all these matters were discussed
throughout the hill country of Judea.
All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,
“What, then, will this child be?"
For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.

Meditacion:

Si prestas atención a las lecturas del Evangelio entre el tiempo de Adviento y la fiesta de la Epifanía, notarás una frase que se repite, especialmente en las lecturas de Lucas. ¡Todos parecían estar extrañados todo el tiempo!

Primero, cuando Zacarías se quedó en el Templo más tiempo de la cuenta debido a un visitante angelical, las personas que esperaban estaban extrañadas de que durara tanto (Lucas 1, 21). Luego, en el Evangelio de hoy, cuando la lengua de Zacarías se soltó y él empezó a bendecir a Dios, la gente estaba asombrada (Lucas 1, 63). Cuando los pastores le contaron a la gente de Belén las buenas noticias del nacimiento de Jesús, todos estaban igualmente admirados (Lucas 2, 18). Incluso José y María quedaron sorprendidos cuando Simeón profetizó que su hijo era “la gloria de tu pueblo Israel” (Lucas 2, 33).

Cuando faltan dos días para Navidad, es un buen momento para recordar por qué todos estaban tan sorprendidos. ¡Porque Jesús es sorprendente! Si lo has estado siguiendo por un tiempo ya, probablemente lo has visto hacer sus obras admirables, ya sea en tu vida o cuando te ha ayudado a acercarte a alguien con su amor. Piensa hoy en algunos de estos eventos y dale gracias por estas bendiciones. Si apenas estás empezando a caminar con Jesús, recuerda que él tiene reservadas cosas maravillosas para ti y para tus seres queridos. Así que no temas y pídele que como “regalo de Navidad” te permita verlo actuar poderosamente.

No importa por cuánto tiempo has estado siguiendo a Jesús, puedes tener la seguridad de que él todavía tiene un trabajo maravilloso que hacer en tu vida. La promesa de la Navidad es una promesa de vida y esperanza nuevas, es una promesa que nunca se acaba. Aunque él vino hace dos mil años, sigue viniendo hoy a tu corazón. Viene a través de los sacramentos, a través de su palabra en la Escritura, viene en el susurro de tu conciencia. Jesús viene en oraciones contestadas y en respuestas postergadas. Y viene en las personas y las situaciones que enfrentamos cada día.

Eso es lo que es tan admirable sobre Jesús: él siempre está con nosotros sin importar lo que suceda. ¡Que nunca olvidemos esta gloriosa verdad!

“Amado Jesús, ¡creo que tú todavía puedes sorprenderme!”

If you pay attention to the Gospel readings between the time of Advent and the feast of the Epiphany, you will notice a phrase that is repeated, especially in the Luke readings. Everyone seemed to be weird all the time!

First, when Zacharias stayed in the Temple longer than necessary due to an angelic visitor, the people waiting were surprised that it lasted so long (Luke 1:21). Then, in today's Gospel, when Zechariah's tongue broke loose and he began to bless God, the people were in awe (Luke 1:63). When the shepherds told the people of Bethlehem the good news of Jesus' birth, everyone was equally amazed (Luke 2:18). Even Joseph and Mary were surprised when Simeon prophesied that his son was "the glory of your people Israel" (Luke 2:33).

With two days until Christmas, it's a good time to remember why everyone was so shocked. Because Jesus is amazing! If you've been following him for a while now, you've probably seen him do his admirable deeds of him, either in your life or when he has helped you get closer to someone with his love. Think about some of these events today and thank him for these blessings. If you are just beginning to walk with Jesus, remember that he has wonderful things in store for you and your loved ones. So fear not and ask him as a "Christmas present" to allow you to see him act powerfully.

No matter how long you have been following Jesus, you can be assured that he still has a wonderful job to do in your life. The promise of Christmas is a promise of new life and hope, it is a promise that never ends. Although he came two thousand years ago, he still comes to your heart today. He comes through the sacraments, through his word in Scripture, he comes in the whisper of your conscience. Jesus comes in answered prayers and delayed answers. And he comes in the people and situations that we face every day.

That's what is so admirable about Jesus: He is always with us no matter what happens. May we never forget this glorious truth!
