San Pedro

Mt 16, 13-19

En aquel tiempo, cuando llegó Jesús a la región de Cesarea de Filipo, hizo esta pregunta a sus discípulos: “¿Quién dice la gente que es el Hijo del hombre?” Ellos le respondieron: “Unos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista; otros, que Elías; otros, que Jeremías o alguno de los profetas”.

Luego les preguntó: “Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” Simón Pedro tomó la palabra y le dijo: “Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo”. Jesús le dijo entonces: “¡Dichoso tú, Simón, hijo de Juan, porque esto no te lo ha revelado ningún hombre, sino mi Padre que está en los cielos! Y yo te digo a ti que tú eres Pedro y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia. Los poderes del infierno no prevalecerán sobre ella. Yo te daré las llaves del Reino de los cielos; todo lo que ates en la tierra quedará atado en el cielo y todo lo que desates en la tierra quedará desatado en el cielo”.

Mt 16:13-19

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi
he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter said in reply, 
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Meditacion:

Podrías preguntarte si alguna vez San Pedro fantaseó con hacer algo distinto cuando era un pescador. Bueno, resulta que Pedro no solo obtuvo un nuevo trabajo sino también un nuevo nombre y una vida radicalmente distinta. Se convirtió en la “piedra” sobre la cual Jesús edificó su Iglesia.  Pedro no se convirtió en un héroe de la Iglesia de la noche a la mañana; por el contrario, requirió tiempo y tuvo que crecer en su nueva identidad, a menudo cometiendo muchos errores a lo largo del camino. ¡Incluso llegó a negar a Jesús en un momento dado! Pero se supo mantener y eventualmente se convirtió en todo lo que Jesús había previsto para él.

En nuestra vida sucede de la misma manera. Cuando somos confirmados, a menudo adoptamos un nuevo nombre, el nombre de un santo. Luego nos comprometemos a continuar creciendo en santidad conforme aprendemos a rendirnos a la obra del Espíritu Santo en nosotros. No es una fantasía, sabemos que somos débiles, pero encontramos consuelo en el hecho de que el Espíritu es poderoso y se deleita en darnos su fuerza.

Al celebrar hoy la misión de San Pedro como obispo y apóstol, recuerda que este hombre que una vez fue pescador no empezó siendo santo. Pero Dios no se dio por vencido con él, ¡y él no se dio por vencido con Dios! Recuerda también que Dios no se rinde contigo, así que ¡no te rindas tú con él! El Señor siempre está dispuesto a concederte más gracia para que puedas ser el héroe o la heroína que en el fondo deseas ser. Y recuerda que tu Padre celestial está a tu lado, animándote en cada paso que das en el camino.

“Señor Jesús, pongo mi confianza en ti. Te ruego que me formes a tu imagen y que remuevas todos los obstáculos que me impiden ser el santo que me has llamado a ser.”

You might wonder if San Pedro ever fantasized about doing something different when he was a fisherman. Well, it turns out that Pedro not only got a new job but also a new name and a radically different life. He became the “stone” on which Jesus built his Church. Peter did not become a hero of the Church overnight; rather, he took time and had to grow into his new identity, often making many mistakes along the way. He even went so far as to deny Jesus at one point! But he kept up and eventually became everything Jesus had envisioned for him.

In our life it happens the same way. When we are confirmed, we often adopt a new name, the name of a saint. Then we commit to continue growing in holiness as we learn to surrender to the work of the Holy Spirit in us. It is not a fantasy, we know we are weak, but we find comfort in the fact that the Spirit is powerful and delights to give us his strength.

As you celebrate the mission of San Pedro as bishop and apostle today, remember that this man who was once a fisherman did not start out as a saint. But God didn't give up on him, and he didn't give up on God! Remember also that God does not give up on you, so don't give up on him! The Lord is always willing to grant you more grace so that you can be the hero or heroine that deep down you want to be. And he remembers that your heavenly Father is by your side, encouraging you with every step you take along the way.

“Lord Jesus, I put my trust in you. I beg you to form me in your image and remove all obstacles that prevent me from being the saint you have called me to be. "
