El profeta

Jn 7, 40-53

En aquel tiempo, algunos de los que habían escuchado a Jesús comenzaron a decir: “Éste es verdaderamente el profeta”. Otros afirmaban: “Éste es el Mesías”. Otros, en cambio, decían: “¿Acaso el Mesías va a venir de Galilea? ¿No dice la Escritura que el Mesías vendrá de la familia de David, y de Belén, el pueblo de David?” Así surgió entre la gente una división por causa de Jesús. Algunos querían apoderarse de él, pero nadie le puso la mano encima.

Los guardias del templo, que habían sido enviados para apresar a Jesús, volvieron a donde estaban los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos, y éstos les dijeron: “¿Por qué no lo han traído?” Ellos respondieron: “Nadie ha hablado nunca como ese hombre”. Los fariseos les replicaron: “¿Acaso también ustedes se han dejado embaucar por él? ¿Acaso ha creído en él alguno de los jefes o de los fariseos? La chusma ésa, que no entiende la ley, está maldita”.

Nicodemo, aquel que había ido en otro tiempo a ver a Jesús, y que era fariseo, les dijo: “¿Acaso nuestra ley condena a un hombre sin oírlo primero y sin averiguar lo que ha hecho?” Ellos le replicaron: “¿También tú eres galileo? Estudia las Escrituras y verás que de Galilea no ha salido ningún profeta”. Y después de esto, cada uno de ellos se fue a su propia casa.

Jn 7:40-53

Some in the crowd who heard these words of Jesus said,
“This is truly the Prophet.”
Others said, “This is the Christ.”
But others said, “The Christ will not come from Galilee, will he?
Does not Scripture say that the Christ will be of David’s family
and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”
So a division occurred in the crowd because of him.
Some of them even wanted to arrest him,
but no one laid hands on him.

So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees,
who asked them, “Why did you not bring him?”
The guards answered, “Never before has anyone spoken like this man.”
So the Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?
Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?
But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed.”
Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them, 
“Does our law condemn a man before it first hears him
and finds out what he is doing?”
They answered and said to him,
“You are not from Galilee also, are you?
Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”

Then each went to his own house.

Meditacion:

Podemos encontrar mucha confusión en este pasaje. Algunos pensaban que Jesús era un profeta, otros que era el Mesías y todavía otros dudaban de que fuera algo especial por el lugar de donde provenía. Incluso algunos creían que debía ser arrestado debido a que sus palabras escandalizaban a muchos de los jefes religiosos.

Sin embargo había un grupo de personas que no estaba confundido: los soldados del Templo. Ellos decidieron no arrestar a Jesús. ¿Cuál fue su razón para desobedecer órdenes directas? “Nadie ha hablado nunca como ese hombre” (Juan 7, 46), dijeron. Algo tenía Jesús en su forma de hablar que los hizo detenerse y cuestionarse a sí mismos a un nivel profundo y fundamental. Las palabras de Jesús habían calado en su corazón, y esas palabras los sorprendieron y los retaron a pensar de una forma distinta sobre el Señor cuyo templo habían jurado proteger.

En algún momento todos nos confundimos, tenemos preguntas sobre nuestra fe, luchamos con alguna enseñanza específica de la Iglesia e incluso a veces leemos la Escritura sin un verdadero entendimiento de lo que ahí se dice o por qué. A veces son los eventos de la vida —los tiempos difíciles de esperar, estar de luto o ver a otras personas sufrir— los que nos desorientan. En esos casos, ¿qué debemos hacer? Podemos aprender algo de estos guardias del templo: A escuchar a Jesús en su Palabra.

La Palabra de Dios tiene poder y podemos experimentar ese poder cuando abrimos nuestro corazón y la escuchamos. Cualquier persona puede escuchar un pasaje de la Biblia que se proclama, pero solo aquellos que tienen sed de Dios sentirán que se dirige a ellos personalmente. Lo mismo sucederá con aquellos que anhelan la verdad, los que saben que su corazón está vacío sin el Señor y aquellos que están cansados de vivir solo para sí mismos. En cada una de estas situaciones, y muchas otras, el Espíritu Santo abre su corazón y viene a ellos, les da un destello del amor de Dios y los invita a seguir buscándolo.

No sabemos lo que sucedió al final con estos guardias, pero sí sabemos algo: Su vida sufrió un giro ese día y ellos no pudieron seguir viviendo como lo hacían antes. Lo mismo sucede con nosotros, no dejemos nunca de escuchar la Palabra de Dios.

“Ven, Espíritu Santo, y pronuncia la Palabra de Dios en mi corazón.”

We can find a lot of confusion in this passage. Some thought that Jesus was a prophet, others that he was the Messiah and still others doubted that he was something special because of where he came from. Some even believed that he should be arrested because his words scandalized many of the religious leaders.

However, there was one group of people who was not confused: the Temple soldiers. They decided not to arrest Jesus. What was his reason for disobeying direct orders? "No one has ever spoken like that man" (John 7:46), they said. There was something about Jesus in the way they spoke about him that made them stop and question themselves on a deep and fundamental level. The words of Jesus had penetrated their hearts, and those words surprised them and challenged them to think differently about the Lord whose temple they had sworn to protect.

At some point we all get confused, we have questions about our faith, we struggle with some specific teaching of the Church, and sometimes we even read Scripture without a true understanding of what is said there or why. Sometimes it's life's events — the hard times of waiting, mourning, or watching other people suffer — that mislead us. In those cases, what should we do? We can learn something from these temple guards: To listen to Jesus in his Word.

God's Word has power and we can experience that power when we open our hearts and listen to it. Anyone can hear a Bible passage being proclaimed, but only those who thirst for God will feel that it is addressed to them personally. The same will happen with those who yearn for the truth, those who know that their heart is empty without the Lord, and those who are tired of living only for themselves. In each of these situations, and many others, the Holy Spirit opens his heart and comes to them, gives them a glimpse of God's love and invites them to continue seeking him.

We do not know what happened in the end with these guards, but we do know something: Their life took a turn that day and they could not continue living as they did before. The same thing happens with us, let us never stop listening to the Word of God.
