San Juan Bautista

Evangelio

Mc 6, 14-29

King Herod heard about Jesus, for his fame had become widespread,
and people were saying,
“John the Baptist has been raised from the dead;
That is why mighty powers are at work in him.”
Others were saying, “He is Elijah”;
still others, “He is a prophet like any of the prophets.”
But when Herod learned of it, he said,
“It is John whom I beheaded. He has been raised up.”

Herod was the one who had John arrested and bound in prison
on account of Herodias,
the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married.
John had said to Herod,
“It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
Herodias harbored a grudge against him
and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so.
Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man,
and kept him in custody.
When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed,
yet he liked to listen to him.
Herodias had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday,
gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers,
and the leading men of Galilee.
His own daughter came in and performed a dance
that delighted Herod and his guests.
The king said to the girl,
“Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.”
He even swore many things to her,
“I will grant you whatever you ask of me,
even to half of my kingdom.”

She went out and said to her mother,
“What shall I ask for?”
Her mother replied, “The head of John the Baptist.”
The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request,
“I want you to give me at once on a platter
the head of John the Baptist.”
The king was deeply distressed,
but because of his oaths and the guests
he did not wish to break his word to her.
So he promptly dispatched an executioner
with orders to bring back his head.
He went off and beheaded him in the prison.
He brought in the head on a platter
and gave it to the girl.
The girl in turn gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard about it,
they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Meditacion:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In some teachings Jesus and the Baptist are so similar that Herod even wonders if they are not the same person. They are two prophets that bother, because they go beyond the conventions of their time. By then the "change of partner" was easy and frequent; and Herodias seemed to be more at ease with his new lover, Herod Antipas, the king of Galilee, than with his half-brother, Philip, the chief of the Golan Heights. And Antipas must have rested the day he "dispatched" his first mate, a Nabataean princess sister of King Aretas IV; He swore eternal hatred for everything that smelled like a Jew, so later on, he proposed to persecute the Jew Saul until the end of the world (cf. 2Co 11,32), who had dared to take to his kingdom (the "Arabia" from Gal 1,17) "a kind of" Judaism.

So far the sitcom. But the evangelist wants to emphasize things of more importance. The radical Jesus had declared marriage indissoluble, according to the original plan of God manifested in the OT, but which the OT itself had "softened", "by the hardness of their hearts" (cf. Mk 10,4-8). Jesus returns to primitive seriousness; he reaffirms the sacred respect for the wife and the dignity of the affective-sexual life. Mark informs us that this had already cost John the Baptist his life.

And this brings us to the second part of the message: prevention against the powerful, always ready to silence the prophet, eliminating him, if necessary, Antipas had imprisoned the Baptist with a bad conscience, convinced that he was a just man; he acted cowardly: his desire to please his new wife was stronger than his respect for the holiness of John. Perhaps he heard from time to time reproaches from his conscience: that was why he came down to speak with the prisoner. On the other hand, Herodias must have had less scruples: he took advantage of the first opportunity to silence definitively the voice that had bothered her husband and her. And Herod fell into new cowardice: what would his wife say about him, and the guests ...? Human respects stifled respect for sanctity and for one's own conscience. Who is not exposed, surely in matters of lesser value, to something similar?

El mandato

Evangelio

Mc 6, 7-13

Gospel

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two
and gave them authority over unclean spirits.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick
–no food, no sack, no money in their belts.
They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic.
He said to them,
“Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you,
leave there and shake the dust off your feet
in testimony against them.”
So they went off and preached repentance.
The Twelve drove out many demons,
and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Meditacion:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"As the Father sent me, so I send you" (Jn 20:21). What is striking about the mission is the poverty, the lack of clothing and resources. Even in Mark's version, where some precepts are attenuated; in the more radical Matthew and Luke, missionaries are forbidden even the staff and sandals. Marcos, with great realism, realized that the long missionary trips of the nascent Church required a minimum of support in walking, protection for the feet. For the rest, perhaps Mark knew that in the prophetic tradition the staff was a sign of authority, with which the envoys of Jesus are invested.

In any case, the detachment of the evangelizers must be total: without bread, saddlebags or coins. The intention is clear: they should not be confused with the pseudo-missionaries of various religions that were abundant at that time, often mere tricksters, who, when they reached a town, proclaimed a religious or philosophical message and then passed the bag to collect the reward. , as it happens now too. Jesus will say to his own: "You received it freely, give it free" (Mt 10,8). A poor and detached Church is a credible Church, Pope Francis and many other religious leaders have been saying almost constantly. When there are interests, the word becomes suspicious. Already Socrates, accused of corrupting the Athenian youth, in his apology said to the judges: "I have an irrefutable testimony of my veracity: that I am poor."

The Gospel text offers even more indications about the mission. This must be accompanied by the testimony. Only those who do not wear fancy or spare clothes are witnesses of the provident God, and of the God of peace and unity who goes defenseless and in community: "two by two." For the rest, the entire believing community must commit itself to the mission, hosting the missionaries in their homes and providing them with what is necessary; in Mt 10,41s a reward is promised to whoever simply offers them a glass of water. The missionaries carry on the itinerant Jesus style.

Que paso aca?

Evangelio

Mc 6, 1-6

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gospel

Jesus departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples.
When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue,
and many who heard him were astonished.
They said, “Where did this man get all this?
What kind of wisdom has been given him?
What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!
Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary,
and the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon?
And are not his sisters here with us?”
And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them,
“A prophet is not without honor except in his native place
and among his own kin and in his own house.”
So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,
apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Meditacion:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How many miracles! In the previous chapter of the Gospel of Saint Mark, we see Jesus enter a cemetery and free a man who had a legion of demons (Mark 5: 1-20). Then to a woman touch her mantle and receive the long-desired healing (5, 25-34). Finally, we see the Lord bringing a girl back to life just by speaking two words (5, 41). But then Jesus went to his town, and the mighty works diminished dramatically.

What happened? Where were people exclaiming that they wanted to be near him? Instead of asking for healing, they were puzzled. Does God love sinners as much as the righteous? Do I have to forgive my enemies? I can't believe that, besides, who is he to tell me how to live?

What happened in Nazareth should not surprise us. Probably each of us has areas of his life in which Jesus confronts us. We can avoid certain Bible verses or disagree with certain Church teachings because they make us uncomfortable. There could be a priest whose direct homilies embarrass us or that brother whose dedication to the poor is a challenge to us. It is normal for us to avoid that person whose testimony moves us to think or act differently. But is it possible that the Holy Spirit is working through them to stimulate our consciousness?

Is there anything about Jesus or his teachings that makes you feel puzzled? If it's something found in Scripture, take some time to prayerfully read those verses or story again, and try to be open to a new or challenging vision. Is one of Jesus' commandments difficult for you? Tell him honestly and ask him to help you understand him better. Set aside some time to read about it or ask your parish priest for advice. Take that step to get a little closer and ask Spirit to soften your heart a little more.

Don't be like the Nazarenes! Present your thoughts or "puzzles" to Jesus and ask him to heal and release you, not by magic but through the slow process of changing your mind; which in itself is a powerful work.

"Lord Jesus, help me to listen to you and to be healed, I beg you."

Todo va a estar bien

Evangelio

Lc 2, 22-40

al que has preparado para bien de todos los pueblos;

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the days were completed for their purification
according to the law of Moses,
Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem
to present him to the Lord,
just as it is written in the law of the Lord,
Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,
and to offer the sacrifice of
a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,
in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.
This man was righteous and devout,
awaiting the consolation of Israel,
and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit
that he should not see death
before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.
He came in the Spirit into the temple;
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus
to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,
he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:

“Now, Master, you may let your servant go
in peace, according to your word,
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples:
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and glory for your people Israel.”

The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,
“Behold, this child is destined
for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted
-and you yourself a sword will pierce-
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
There was also a prophetess, Anna,
the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.
She was advanced in years,
having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage,
and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.
She never left the temple,
but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.
And coming forward at that very time,
she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child
to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions
of the law of the Lord,
they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;
and the favor of God was upon him.

Meditacion:

Amen

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who wouldn't want some comfort today? Who wouldn't want to feel that the Lord puts his arm around his shoulder and says “everything is going to be okay”?

Simeon was a righteous man who waited for God's comfort, for the Lord had promised restoration for his people, Israel. He had promised a Messiah who would sit on David's throne and draw all nations to Jerusalem. For many years, Simeon prayed that these promises would be fulfilled, but time passed and nothing happened. Israel was still a nation occupied by the Romans, and her people were still divided into rich and poor, Pharisees and Sadducees, between those of Galilee and those of Judea. However, Simeon persevered and kept praying for redemption, and he, too, kept waiting.

Finally, the long-awaited day arrived. Imagine how much tenderness there was at that moment when Simeon took the baby Jesus in his arms. At last "the consolation of Israel" had come (Luke 2:25, 26). Surely you can hear the emotion that came from his words: "Lord, you can now let your servant die in peace" (Luke 2:29). At last I have seen it, I can leave now, Lord, because you have kept your promise, you have come to save my people.

At that time and place Simeon was certain that everything would be fine. He didn't know what was going to happen or when it would happen, but that didn't matter, he was sure that something would happen, and that was enough to believe.

God knows what causes you anguish; he hears your prayers and he knows your concerns, so he allows you to offer his comfort to you. Today, when you go to the house of the Lord, you will meet Jesus in the peculiar form of bread and wine, just as Simeon met him in the peculiar form of a child. When you receive it, think of this man of prayer and just as he did, take Jesus in your hands and in your heart. The Lord has come to bring salvation and comfort; it may not tell you how or when, but that doesn't matter now. Always remember that Christ is in your heart and everything will be fine.

"Dear Lord, my eyes have seen your salvation, I give myself fully to you." Amen

Endemoniados

Evangelio

Mc 5, 1-20

Gospel

Jesus and his disciples came to the other side of the sea,
to the territory of the Gerasenes.
When he got out of the boat,
at once a man from the tombs who had an unclean spirit met him.
The man had been dwelling among the tombs,
and no one could restrain him any longer, even with a chain.
In fact, he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains,
but the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shackles smashed,
and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
Night and day among the tombs and on the hillsides
he was always crying out and bruising himself with stones.
Catching sight of Jesus from a distance,
he ran up and prostrated himself before him,
crying out in a loud voice,
“What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?
I adjure you by God, do not torment me!”
(He had been saying to him, “Unclean spirit, come out of the man!”)
He asked him, “What is your name?”

He  replied, “Legion is my name.  There are many of us.”
And he pleaded earnestly with him
not to drive them away from that territory.

Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside.
And they pleaded with him,
“Send us into the swine.  Let us enter them.”
And he let them, and the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine.
The herd of about two thousand rushed down a steep bank into the sea,
where they were drowned.
The swineherds ran away and reported the incident in the town
and throughout the countryside.
And people came out to see what had happened.
As they approached Jesus,
they caught sight of the man who had been possessed by Legion,
sitting there clothed and in his right mind.
And they were seized with fear.
Those who witnessed the incident explained to them what had happened
to the possessed man and to the swine.
Then they began to beg him to leave their district.
As he was getting into the boat,
the man who had been possessed pleaded to remain with him.
But Jesus would not permit him but told him instead,
“Go home to your family and announce to them
all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.”
Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis
what Jesus had done for him; and all were amazed.

Meditacion:

Amen

Today's Gospel surprises us and is even a little scary.

Jesus meets a demoniac. No one had been able to beat him, he was not even attached to chains and he lived in exile from community life in the cemetery, away from all the people.

We can imagine someone like that, violent, lonely, someone who in our days would undoubtedly be in a madhouse, heavily sedated and under control.

This man, barely seeing Jesus, came to implore him to get away from Him, he did not want to know anything about Jesus and his healing.

Jesus (in an act that he will not do again) asks him for his name and sends him out of that man, passing all these demons to a pile of pigs that were nearby.

How many times are we ourselves like this demoniac that we don't want to know anything about Jesus because we are afraid of losing our material goods!

Many times we do not want to donate some money or time for our parishes claiming that we are too busy or that we do not have when it is God who gives us everything!

We prefer to put God aside, not look to our own salvation for the changes it will cause in our life!

And when we finally let ourselves be filled with that wonderful love of God, we find something much more important and more lasting than material goods.

To accept the love of God is to find the most precious of goods.

And what happened at the end of this Gospel happens, you go out to proclaim the simple joy of God's love, which is dressed in many colors, which comes in many different forms, which can be found in each of our brothers.

Today is Monday, the beginning of the fourth week in ordinary time; in a little bit more, we will begin the curesma.

Let's go out today to accept God's love in every detail. Amen
