Lc 12, 49-53

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "He venido a traer fuego a la tierra, ¡y cuánto desearía que ya estuviera ardiendo! Tengo que recibir un bautismo, ¡y cómo me angustio mientras llega!

¿Piensan acaso que he venido a traer paz a la tierra? De ningún modo. No he venido a traer la paz, sino la división. De aquí en adelante, de cinco que haya en una familia, estarán divididos tres contra dos y dos contra tres. Estará dividido el padre contra el hijo, el hijo contra el padre, la madre contra la hija y la hija contra la madre, la suegra contra la nuera y la nuera contra la suegra''.

GospelLK 12:49-53

Jesus said to his disciples:
“I have come to set the earth on fire,
and how I wish it were already blazing!
There is a baptism with which I must be baptized,
and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!
Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth?
No, I tell you, but rather division.
From now on a household of five will be divided,
three against two and two against three;
a father will be divided against his son
and a son against his father,
a mother against her daughter
and a daughter against her mother,
a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Meditacion:

Es dificil aceptar un Jesus que nos habla de confrontacion y division, cuando lo que esperamos es, justamente, lo contrario.

 Naturalmente este texto refleja situaciones  que vivían algunos miembros de las comunidades cristianas, a quienes Lucas dirige su evangelio. Han abrazado con alegría y generosidad la fe, quieren seguir a Jesús con todas las consecuencias. Y de pronto se encuentran enfrentados a los seres más queridos de sus familias. Son sufrimientos muy profundos precisamente porque afectan a la relación con personas que se quieren de verdad. La fe en Jesús se convierte en una cruz dentro de la familia. Es inevitable que se den divisiones y actitudes encontradas a causa de Jesús. Ser cristiano de verdad es muy bello, pero ¡qué difícil es! Ojalá nunca se dieran esas incomprensiones familiares, pero es inevitable que puedan ocurrir.

Y ocurren porque Jesus es incomodo, seguir su camino lleva a cambios profundos en la personas que molestan a los demas.

Muchas veces las personas no quieren ver a alguien donarse y amar generosamente a otros hermanos, ellos no lo hacen y no quieren que otros lo hagan; el sentido de empatia se les rompe aca.

Y comienzan los conflictos.

Porque para seguir a Jesus es un romper molde tras molde, matar nuestro egoismo, dejar que el amor tome el comando de nuestras vidas.

Cristo es el camino seguro hacia el Padre. Cuando nos hablaba del fuego que deseaba que ya estuviera ardiendo, se refería al Espíritu Santo que vendría tras sus pasos para llenar el corazón de cada creyente. Las divisiones que mencionó se referían a los conceptos o ideologías contrarias a Dios, y a quienes los sostienen, porque todo lo que se opone a Dios quedará separado de su Reino.

Ante desafíos tan difíciles como éstos, ¿qué podemos hacer cuando vemos que alguien no acepta la Palabra de Dios? No dudar jamás de defender las verdades del Evangelio. Si nos declaramos partidarios de Cristo, nuestro Padre nos protegerá de los engaños del mundo, porque estamos llamados a pasar por el fuego purificador de Dios. Así, pues, aceptemos de todo corazón su Palabra poderosa, la filosa espada del Espíritu Santo que penetra inexorablemente hasta separar “el trigo y la paja”.

“Jesús, Señor nuestro, nos entregamos una vez más a ti. Cueste lo que cueste queremos seguirte a ti y rechazamos las promesas ilusorias con que trata de engañarnos el mundo.” Amen

It is difficult to accept a Jesus who speaks to us about confrontation and division, when what we expect is just the opposite.

 Naturally this text reflects situations experienced by some members of the Christian communities, to whom Luke directs his gospel. They have embraced faith with joy and generosity, they want to follow Jesus with all the consequences. And suddenly they are faced with the most loved ones of their families. They are very deep sufferings precisely because they affect the relationship with people who really love each other. Faith in Jesus becomes a cross within the family. It is inevitable that there will be divisions and attitudes found because of Jesus. Being a real Christian is very beautiful, but how difficult it is! I wish those family misunderstandings never occurred, but it is inevitable that they may occur.

And they happen because Jesus is uncomfortable, following his path leads to profound changes in people who bother others.

Many times people do not want to see someone donate and generously love other brothers, they do not and do not want others to do so; The sense of empathy is broken here.

And conflicts begin.

Because to follow Jesus is to break mold after mold, kill our selfishness, let love take command of our lives.

Christ is the sure way to the Father. When he spoke to us of the fire that he wished was already burning, he was referring to the Holy Spirit that would come after his steps to fill the heart of each believer. The divisions he mentioned referred to concepts or ideologies contrary to God, and those who support them, because everything that opposes God will be separated from his Kingdom.

In the face of such difficult challenges, what can we do when we see that someone does not accept the Word of God? Never hesitate to defend the truths of the Gospel. If we declare ourselves in favor of Christ, our Father will protect us from the deceptions of the world, because we are called to go through the purifying fire of God. Thus, let us accept with all my heart his mighty Word, the sharp sword of the Holy Spirit that inexorably penetrates until "wheat and straw" are separated.

Al que mucho se le confia...

Lc 12, 39-48

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Fíjense en esto: Si un padre de familia supiera a qué hora va a venir el ladrón, estaría vigilando y no dejaría que se le metiera por un boquete en su casa. Pues también ustedes estén preparados, porque a la hora en que menos lo piensen, vendrá el Hijo del hombre".

Entonces Pedro le preguntó a Jesús: "¿Dices esta parábola sólo por nosotros o por todos?"

El Señor le respondió: "Supongan que un administrador, puesto por su amo al frente de la servidumbre con el encargo de repartirles a su tiempo los alimentos, se porta con fidelidad y prudencia. Dichoso ese siervo, si el amo, a su llegada, lo encuentra cumpliendo con su deber. Yo les aseguro que lo pondrá al frente de todo lo que tiene.

Pero si ese siervo piensa: 'Mi amo tardará en llegar' y empieza a maltratar a los otros siervos y siervas, a comer, a beber y a embriagarse, el día menos pensado y a la hora más inesperada llegará su amo y lo castigará severamente y le hará correr la misma suerte de los desleales.

El siervo que conociendo la voluntad de su amo, no haya preparado ni hecho lo que debía, recibirá muchos azotes; pero el que, sin conocerla, haya hecho algo digno de castigo, recibirá pocos.

Al que mucho se le da, se le exigirá mucho; y al que mucho se le confía, se le exigirá mucho más.

GospelLK 12:39-48

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Be sure of this:
if the master of the house had known the hour
when the thief was coming,
he would not have let his house be broken into.
You also must be prepared,
for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come."

Then Peter said,
"Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?"
And the Lord replied,
"Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward
whom the master will put in charge of his servants
to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?
Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.
Truly, I say to you, he will put him
in charge of all his property.
But if that servant says to himself,
'My master is delayed in coming,'
and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants,
to eat and drink and get drunk,
then that servant's master will come
on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour
and will punish the servant severely
and assign him a place with the unfaithful.
That servant who knew his master's will
but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will
shall be beaten severely;
and the servant who was ignorant of his master's will
but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating
shall be beaten only lightly.
Much will be required of the person entrusted with much,
and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more."

Meditacion:

Si leemos atentamente el evangelio de hoy veremos que a Pedro no le quedó claro si la parábola se aplicaba solamente a todos los discípulos o más bien a los líderes de la comunidad.  Por eso viene la segunda parábola que transporta la misma exigencias del “¡Estad preparados!” en el asumir las responsabilidades típicas de un animador de la comunidad, a quien Jesús llama “el administrador fiel y prudente” y que se aplica a todos los que sirven a la comunidad.

Cristo nos presenta la vida como una misión: «estar al frente de la servidumbre para darle a tiempo su ración». Venimos a la tierra para algo, y ese algo es tan importante que de él depende la felicidad eterna nuestra y de otras personas; o dicho de otro modo, la felicidad de otros será nuestra felicidad.

En el cristianismo no rige eso del «come y bebe que la vida es breve», ni el «vivir a tope», entendido como aprovechar cada instante para conseguir más placer y más bienestar egoísta.

La característica del administrador “fiel y prudente” es que sabe que los bienes no son suyos, no es tacaño ni rígido, sabe hacer que alcance para todos la comida. Éste recibirá la “bienaventuranza” de su Señor y se le concederán funciones de mayor responsabilidad en la comunidad.

Las características del administrador “infiel”: primero se descuida en la vigilancia, se da buena vida, se aprovecha de las circunstancias; luego, ya no sabe dirigir la comunidad, se pone agresivo y se olvida de los demás. Primero se olvida de sí mismo y luego de los demás. El castigo es todavía mayor.

Querido hermano, Cristo es el único que puede darte libertad y paz. Pídele hoy que te ayude a luchar contra el pecado.

“Jesús, Señor mío, te doy gracias por la libertad que me has dado frente al pecado y te ruego que me ayudes a rechazar el mal y entregarme a ti para vivir rectamente.” Amen

If we read today's Gospel carefully, we will see that it was not clear to Peter whether the parable applied only to all the disciples or rather to the community leaders. Dichosos ellos....

Lc 12, 35-38

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Estén listos, con la túnica puesta y las lámparas encendidas. Sean semejantes a los criados que están esperando a que su señor regrese de la boda, para abrirle en cuanto llegue y toque. Dichosos aquellos a quienes su señor, al llegar, encuentre en vela. Yo les aseguro que se recogerá la túnica, los hará sentar a la mesa y él mismo les servirá. Y si llega a medianoche o a la madrugada y los encuentra en vela, dichosos ellos".

GospelLK 12:35-38

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Gird your loins and light your lamps
and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding,
ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.
Blessed are those servants
whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.
Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself,
have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.
And should he come in the second or third watch
and find them prepared in this way,
blessed are those servants."

Meditacion:

"Esten listos" dice Jesus y a todos nos entra un miedito por la espalda. Porque no sabemos que sucedera, como ni cuando. Muchos deciden pasar por esta vida como un eterno carnaval, "vida hay una sola y hay que disfrutarla" dicen. Estar preparado exige disciplina, ser consistente, "estar en la jugada" todo el tiempo. 

Para mi se trata de vivir en la gracia de Dios, caminando sus caminos con esta mirada cargada de misericordia y amor por el projimo con que Jesus caminaba la tierra.

Y es entonces que Dios nos sorprende. Anoche mismo, charlando con una mujer que esta pasando una situacion personal muy dificil le decia que orarara al Espiritu Santo para que le ayudara a tomar las decisiones que la vida le esta pidiendo. Caminar en la gracia, confiar en Dios nuestros problemas, ayudar a otros y dejar y confiar que El se encargara. Ese es el tipo de preparacion que el evangelio nos pide hoy.

Entonces, cuando sea nuestro tiempo de partir, podremos decir como dice el dicho "Nada temo porque nada debo"

No pongas límites a lo que Dios puede hacer por ti, en ti y a través de ti. La vida iluminada por el Señor está llena de sorpresas.

“Amado Jesús, quiero estar listo para recibirte, como sea que llames hoy a mi puerta.” Amen

"Be ready," says Jesus and we all get a little bit in the back. Because we don't know what will happen, like or when. Many decide to go through this life as an eternal carnival, "there is only one life and you have to enjoy it" they say. Being prepared requires discipline, being consistent, "being on the play" all the time.

For me it is about living in the grace of God, walking his ways with this gaze full of mercy and love for the neighbor with whom Jesus walked the earth.

And it is then that God surprises us. Last night, chatting with a woman who is going through a very difficult personal situation told her to pray to the Holy Spirit to help her make the decisions that life is asking for. Walk in grace, trust in God our problems, help others and leave and trust that He will take care of it. That is the kind of preparation the gospel asks us today.

Then, when it is our time to leave, we can say as the saying goes "I fear nothing because I owe nothing"

Do not put limits on what God can do for you, in you and through you. The life enlightened by the Lord is full of surprises.

“Beloved Jesus, I want to be ready to receive you, whatever you knock on my door today.” Amen

Lo que tiene valor

Lc 12, 13-21

En aquel tiempo, hallándose Jesús en medio de una multitud, un hombre le dijo: "Maestro, dile a mi hermano que comparta conmigo la herencia". Pero Jesús le contestó: "Amigo, ¿quién me ha puesto como juez en la distribución de herencias?"

Y dirigiéndose a la multitud, dijo: "Eviten toda clase de avaricia, porque la vida del hombre no depende de la abundancia de los bienes que posea".

Después les propuso esta parábola: "Un hombre rico tuvo una gran cosecha y se puso a pensar: '¿Qué haré, porque no tengo ya en dónde almacenar la cosecha? Ya sé lo que voy a hacer: derribaré mis graneros y construiré otros más grandes para guardar ahí mi cosecha y todo lo que tengo. Entonces podré decirme: Ya tienes bienes acumulados para muchos años; descansa, come, bebe y date a la buena vida'. Pero Dios le dijo: '¡Insensato! Esta misma noche vas a morir. ¿Para quién serán todos tus bienes?' Lo mismo le pasa al que amontona riquezas para sí mismo y no se hace rico de lo que vale ante Dios".

GospelLK 12:13-21

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus,
"Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me."
He replied to him,
"Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?"
Then he said to the crowd,
"Take care to guard against all greed,
for though one may be rich,
one's life does not consist of possessions."

Then he told them a parable.
"There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest.
He asked himself, 'What shall I do,
for I do not have space to store my harvest?'
And he said, 'This is what I shall do:
I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones.
There I shall store all my grain and other goods
and I shall say to myself, "Now as for you,
you have so many good things stored up for many years,
rest, eat, drink, be merry!"'
But God said to him,
'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you;
and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?'
Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself
but is not rich in what matters to God."

Meditacion:

Ayer por la tarde se incendio uno de los tantos campamentos de personas sin techo cerca de donde vivo. Pense y ore por esas personas que de tener "casi" nada pasaron a no tener nada en unos minutos.

Y me pregunto como ese simple y lamentable hecho que cada vez es mas comun en mi ciudad se pudiera contemplar a la luz del evangelio de hoy.

El Señor enseñó que no es la falta de bienes materiales la que nos hace pobres; sino la preocupación de qué y cuánto tenemos y qué podemos hacer para obtener más. ¿Por qué? Porque nos hace desviar la atención de los tesoros que Dios nos tiene reservados; nos lleva a dejar de pensar en el servicio que le debemos a nuestro Creador y nos hace valorar más las cosas creadas, que naturalmente son pasajeras. Jesús no dice que las posesiones materiales sean malas o que no tengan valor; pero deja en claro que “la vida del hombre no depende de los bienes” (Lucas 12, 15).

Al igual que estas personas que se quedaron sin nada, nosotros tambien nos quedamos sin nada en el plano espiritual cuando buscamos solo acumular cosas materiales.

Y lo digo porque ya casi termina Octubre y comenzara por aca al menos un largo plano inclinado que nos llevara al tiempo de Dia de Accion de Gracias y Navidad, donde muchas veces pensamos mas con el bolsillo los regalos que tenemos que comprar que con el corazon de participar de las celebraciones de la epoca.

La semana pasada un sacerdote que vive en Sierra Leona, Africa me contacto y me conto que para celebrar misa debe caminar cada dia 6 millas de ida y otras tantas de vuelta. 

Imaginense mis amigos si nosotros tuvieramos que hacer semejante esfuerzo!

No confiemos o depositemos nuestras riquezas mas que en el Reino de Dios

¿Cuáles son las cosas que “valen ante Dios”? Primero, el hecho de saber que él nos ama personalmente a cada uno de nosotros, pues nos creó por amor y nos ama siempre. Segundo, que le importamos tanto que podemos confiar en que siempre nos protegerá. Tercero, que Jesús murió y resucitó para que podamos experimentar la gracia transformadora de Dios en nuestra vida. Y finalmente, que confiemos en su amor misericordioso y nos dediquemos a amar y servir a cuantos nos rodean, especialmente aquellos que se encuentran en necesidad, tanto en nuestra propia familia, en la parroquia o en el vecindario.

Padre celestial, enséñame a acumular las riquezas celestiales que de ti provienen. Confío en que tú proveerás para mí.” Amen

Yesterday afternoon one of the many homeless camps was burned near where I live. Think and pray for those people who had "almost" nothing happened to have nothing in a few minutes.

And I wonder how that simple and unfortunate fact that it is becoming more common in my city could be seen in the light of today's Gospel.

The Lord taught that it is not the lack of material goods that makes us poor; but the concern of what and how much we have and what we can do to get more. Why? Because it makes us divert attention from the treasures that God has in store for us; it leads us to stop thinking about the service we owe to our Creator and makes us value more the created things, which are naturally temporary. Jesus does not say that material possessions are bad or have no value; but make it clear that "the life of man does not depend on goods" (Luke 12:15).

Like these people who were left with nothing, we too are left with nothing on the spiritual plane when we seek only to accumulate material things.

And I say it because October is almost over and at least a long inclined plane will begin here that will take us to the time of Thanksgiving and Christmas, where many times we think more with the pocket of the gifts we have to buy than with the heart to participate in the celebrations of the time.

Last week a priest who lives in Sierra Leone, Africa contacted me and told me that to celebrate Mass he must walk 6 miles each day and as many back.

Imagine my friends if we had to make such an effort!

Let us not trust or deposit our riches except in the Kingdom of God

What are the things that "are worth before God"? First, knowing that he personally loves each one of us, because he created us for love and always loves us. Second, that we care so much that we can trust that he will always protect us. Third, that Jesus died and rose again so that we can experience the transforming grace of God in our lives. And finally, that we trust in his merciful love and dedicate ourselves to love and serve those around us, especially those who are in need, both in our own family, in the parish or in the neighborhood.

Heavenly Father, teach me to accumulate the heavenly riches that come from you. I trust you will provide for me. ”Amen

Confiar

Lc 12, 8-12

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Yo les aseguro que a todo aquel que me reconozca abiertamente ante los hombres, lo reconocerá abiertamente el Hijo del hombre ante los ángeles de Dios; pero a aquel que me niegue ante los hombres, yo lo negaré ante los ángeles de Dios.

A todo aquel que diga una palabra contra el Hijo del hombre, se le perdonará; pero a aquel que blasfeme contra el Espíritu Santo, no se le perdonará.

Cuando los lleven a las sinagogas y ante los jueces y autoridades, no se preocupen de cómo se van a defender o qué van a decir, porque el Espíritu Santo les enseñará en aquel momento lo que convenga decir''.

GospelLK 12:8-12

Jesus said to his disciples:
"I tell you,
everyone who acknowledges me before others
the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God.
But whoever denies me before others
will be denied before the angels of God.

"Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,
but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit
will not be forgiven.
When they take you before synagogues and before rulers and authorities,
do not worry about how or what your defense will be
or about what you are to say.
For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say."

Meditacion:

El evangelio de hoy nos insta a no preocuparnos, a dejar que mi gran amigo, el Espiritu Santo, tome las riendas y nos guie y hable por nosotros.

Y detras de este evangelio creo esta uno de los pecados mas grandes que cometemos diariamente: perder nuestro tiempo.

Perdemos horrorosamente el tiempo pensando que sucedera en diferentes ocasiones, preocupandonos por cosas que no podemos cambiar o si y no lo hacemos.

"La promesa que Dios hizo a Abraham y a sus descendientes, de que ellos heredarían el mundo, no dependía de la observancia de la ley, sino de la justificación obtenida mediante la fe" nos dice San Pablo en la primera lectura de hoy en la carta a los romanos.

Entonces confía en que Jesús es fiel. Lo ha sido en el pasado y no se detendrá ahora. Entre más reconozcas que el Espíritu Santo te impulsa a hablar, y luego lo haces, más fácil te resultará la próxima vez.

“Ven, Espíritu Santo, e infunde en mí las palabras que tú deseas que yo pronuncie.” Amen

Today's Gospel urges us not to worry, to let my great friend, the Holy Spirit, take the reins and guide us and speak for us.

And behind this gospel I believe this is one of the greatest sins we commit daily: wasting our time.

We waste time horribly thinking that it will happen on different occasions, worrying about things that we cannot change or if and we do not.

"The promise that God made to Abraham and his descendants, that they would inherit the world, did not depend on the observance of the law, but on the justification obtained through faith" St. Paul tells us in today's first reading in the letter to the Romans

Then trust that Jesus is faithful. It has been in the past and will not stop now. The more you recognize that the Holy Spirit drives you to speak, and then you do it, the easier it will be for you next time.

“Come, Holy Spirit, and instill in me the words that you wish me to pronounce.” Amen

San Lucas

Lc 10, 1-9

En aquel tiempo, Jesús designó a otros setenta y dos discípulos y los mandó por delante, de dos en dos, a todos los pueblos y lugares a donde pensaba ir, y les dijo: "La cosecha es mucha y los trabajadores pocos. Rueguen, por lo tanto, al dueño de la mies que envíe trabajadores a sus campos. Pónganse en camino; yo los envío como corderos en medio de lobos. No lleven ni dinero ni morral ni sandalias y no se detengan a saludar a nadie por el camino. Cuando entren en una casa digan: 'Que la paz reine en esta casa'. Y si allí hay gente amante de la paz, el deseo de paz de ustedes se cumplirá; si no, no se cumplirá. Quédense en esa casa. Coman y beban de lo que tengan, porque el trabajador tiene derecho a su salario. No anden de casa en casa. En cualquier ciudad donde entren y los reciban, coman lo que les den. Curen a los enfermos que haya y díganles: 'Ya se acerca a ustedes el Reino de Dios' ".

GospelLK 10:1-9

The Lord Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples
whom he sent ahead of him in pairs
to every town and place he intended to visit.
He said to them,

Hoy celebramos a San Lucas, el evangelista.

San Lucas escribió más de un cuarto del Nuevo Testamento, pues aparte del Evangelio que lleva su nombre, también escribió los Hechos de los Apóstoles, libro en el cual nos ofrece un recuento claro e histórico del nacimiento y crecimiento de la Iglesia primitiva. Repasemos algunos de los temas favoritos de Lucas.

En primer lugar, el mensaje de Jesús es uno de gozo (Lucas 1, 14. 44. 47. 58), pues Lucas es el único que relata los episodios que conocemos como los misterios gozosos del rosario y el único que menciona la alegría que hay en el cielo cuando se encuentra lo que se había perdido: la oveja, la moneda y el hijo pródigo (15, 1-32).

El segundo mensaje es de misericordia. Lucas nos cuenta que Jesús consoló a una mujer arrepentida, cuando ésta le ungió los pies con perfume, y que participó en una comida con Zaqueo, un recaudador de impuestos bien conocido (7, 36-50; 19, 1-10). Nadie es demasiado pecador para Jesús.

Tercero, el cuidado y la ayuda a los pobres. Lucas dice que Jesús nació en condiciones de pobreza y nos advierte contra el peligro de caer en la tentación de ambicionar riquezas (12, 16-21; 6, 24). En la parábola del rico y el pobre Lázaro, nos presenta una imagen escalofriante de lo que puede suceder si tenemos el corazón endurecido y las manos cerradas y no auxiliamos a los pobres (16, 19-31).

El cuarto mensaje se refiere a la oración. Lucas dice que Jesús rezaba sin cesar y más aún en cada ocasión importante de su vida: en su Bautismo (3, 21), cuando escogió a sus apóstoles (6, 12), en la Transfiguración (9, 28) y en el huerto de Getsemaní (22, 41). El Señor nos enseñó también a orar a nuestro Padre celestial con fe y confianza (11, 9-13).

Finalmente, Jesús nos exhorta a llenarnos del Espíritu Santo, como lo estaban Juan el Bautista, María, Isabel, Zacarías y Simeón. Justo antes de ascender al cielo, el Señor prometió que nosotros también recibiríamos la unción del Espíritu Santo (Hechos 1, 5. 8).

Gozo, misericordia, preocupación por los pobres, oración y el Espíritu Santo: todas éstas son formas que utiliza Lucas para decirnos que el Reino de Dios está “cerca” (Lucas 19, 9). Así que sintámonos hoy parte de este Reino.

“Señor Jesús, llénanos de tu gozo mientras nos dedicamos a vivir para servirte.”

Today we celebrate Saint Luke, the evangelist.

Saint Luke wrote more than a quarter of the New Testament, because apart from the Gospel that bears his name, he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles, a book in which he offers us a clear and historical account of the birth and growth of the early Church. Let's review some of Lucas's favorite songs.

In the first place, Jesus' message is one of joy (Luke 1:14, 44. 47. 58), for Luke is the only one who recounts the episodes we know as the joyful mysteries of the rosary and the only one who mentions the joy that there is in heaven when one finds what was lost: the sheep, the coin and the prodigal son (15, 1-32).

The second message is of mercy. Luke tells us that Jesus comforted a repentant woman, when she anointed his feet with perfume, and that he participated in a meal with Zacchaeus, a well-known tax collector (7, 36-50; 19, 1-10). No one is too sinful for Jesus.

Third, care and help for the poor. Luke says that Jesus was born in conditions of poverty and warns us against the danger of falling into the temptation to ambition wealth (12, 16-21; 6, 24). In the parable of the rich and the poor Lazarus, he presents us with a chilling image of what can happen if we have a hardened heart and closed hands and do not help the poor (16, 19-31).

The fourth message refers to prayer. Luke says that Jesus prayed endlessly and even more on every important occasion of his life: in his Baptism (3, 21), when he chose his apostles (6, 12), in the Transfiguration (9, 28) and in the garden of Gethsemane (22, 41). The Lord also taught us to pray to our heavenly Father with faith and confidence (11, 9-13).

Finally, Jesus exhorts us to fill ourselves with the Holy Spirit, as were John the Baptist, Mary, Elizabeth, Zechariah and Simeon. Just before ascending to heaven, the Lord promised that we too would receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1, 5. 8).

Joy, mercy, concern for the poor, prayer and the Holy Spirit: all of these are ways Luke uses to tell us that the Kingdom of God is "near" (Luke 19, 9). So let's feel part of this Kingdom today.
